I'm sitting here watching "The Wizard", and the first scene in the movie, where the kid is wandering around the desert, reminds me of Southern California, which is where I lived during the 80's, specifically 89, when I first saw this movie. This brought back memories of watching "Amazing Stories" (which is streaming on Netflix, if anyone is interested), which is a pretty good 80's TV show. All of this reminds me of MUSCLE, my favorite childhood toy, which is what brought me to this site in the first place, and why I'm writing all of this out. What is it about the 80's that is so different than any other decade? Is it just me, or were some of the best TV shows, toys, and video games created in the 80's? It's definitely the part of my life that I am the most nostalgic about, sometimes to the point of melancholy. I collect 80's toys, I get wistful watching 80's movies. I'm incredibly happy in my life as an adult living in the second decade of the new millennia, but there is this sort of draw back to the 80's, and dare I be so bold as to say that I haven't noticed a lot of other generations before or after mine pining for their childhoods as much as kids from the 80's do. Thoughts?
Why are the 80's the best decade?

Go to the megomuseum and plaidstallions to see 70s kids in all their glory.
And there are numerous 90s kids nostalgia sites.
50s theme restaurants and hotels still dot the landscape, and Flower Power still lives.
The movies, and music will never die!
That said, I am the prototypical 80s kid. I was born on the first day, and the entire decade shaped me as a person.

I was born at the ass end of the 80's and grew up in the 90's and technically the new millennium. I was the second youngest in my family, (only beating my brother), so I had lots of older cousins with awesome stuff, (NES, for example).
Always been a big fan of Star Wars, (though the first one started in the 70s), but my love of Transformers started with Beast Wars, naturally.
My nostalgia is for the 90's, but I love 80's everything better.

We grew up in the 80s. We're who all of that pop culture and toys were for. But I am nere to tell you that Pulsar is just as cool as Mosquitor. And in many ways, cooler.

Krangala: being born in 79, I have no basis for comparison, but it has been my experience that 80's kids are far more exuberant about the 80's than kids from the 70's. Obviously you hold the same importance for the 70's as we do the 80's, which is awesome, but it seems to me people celebrating the 70's are the minority next to people celebrating the 80's. I'm not at all saying that the 70's aren't important or that the 80's are more important, or even that other decades aren't celebrated (you brought up an excellent point with 50's style diners), it just seems like the 80's hold more significance than other decades in terms of reproduction, and nostalgia.

please remember, that I AM an 80s kid. I am the original MTV generation. I subsisted on Saturday Morning Cartoons, and sugary cereals, kool aid and popsicles.
And I am very much of the mind that we had some great toys, and some good cartoons (nostalgia goggles lifted after seeing them as an adult, of course......many do not hold up). Some of my best childhood memories take place in toystores.
I'm just trying to illustrate the other side of the coin, so to speak. Yeah, you're likely to find agreement on your point here, as we are, by and large, 80s kids. But earlier generations have their own claims too. It's hard to beat most of the bands of the 70s, and while 80s music has endured, a lot of the acts that were truly big in the 80s were just awful.

Ha! You've got me there, in regards to music - I've been going backwards in time recently to find new music, as a lot of the music around these days is crap. A lot of it's great, too, but a lot of it is crap
I didn't know Critters was originally PG13! That sh*t was terrifying when I was a kid!

I dig the 90's and for music I like old 1950's country music. Most of the 1980's were gone before I was fully aware.
