So I seen this auction a few weeks ago and never heard anything about it. It is a supposed Stone Cobra that does not have the black swirls marbled into it. I am curious if the winner has received it yet and provide some feedback on the figure.

Check it out, 2 thumbs.  I think Dave makes em that way.  Was this on one of the Asian sites?  I vaguely remember seeing this browsing around.  Expensive too, right?

I´ve seen those when they´re listed and been discussing with a fellow member from here about bidding on them or not.

There were various pros and cons in regards to these because they´re obviously not the common Stone Cobra´s that´s for sure.

But that doesn´t exclude the option of these being early production types or concept versions for the eventual design of the Stone Cobra as we know it.

Let´s not forget that the base color of the Stone Cobra was solid Grey and the striping/marbling effect was added to this later in a similar way they made a Striped Clear Carp out of the Clear Carps. So from that point of view the solid Grey one is an interesting piece even though it does have two right arms, which is a common thing to see amongst samples. Main concern on that one was the fact that also here, I posted about this in another topic today as well, the light used for the picture is causing a lot of doubts about the actual color of the figure. It seems to be way to light Grey to be a Stone Cobra base but this can be caused by the light. The other figure that´s supposed to look more like the Stone Cobra received some kind of paint job (?) or treatment in order to (test?) create the look of the Stone Cobra...

So depending on the way you look at them both are either very suspicious or very interesting if you´re looking at it from an early production phase point of view in which case these might be prototypes/test shots.

Our main concern though, and the reason why we both didn´t decide to bid on these, was the fact that even IF they´d be early stage samples there´s simply NO WAY to get that verified at this stage.

Later, once they had been sold, we found out that the same seller had listed and sold original normal looking Stone Cobra´s in the past as well and there were no doubts visible on those. This means we´re either dealing with reproductions and the ones he´s been listed the last like this solid Grey one and the strange looking one were failures. Which is not very likely knowing he could´ve still painted the solid Grey one like the others he had sold as original ones before or they might´ve indeed been related to someone from the design team of Takara and they are early stages of the Stone Cobra, but yet again it would be impossible to prove...

Interesting that the picture I just received about the stone cobra I had in question seems very similar to the bottom of the feet on the “unpainted stone cobra”.

Here is a better comparison I think... The arrows point to irregularities that are on both the unpainted and painted.

True, but you´ve to ask yourself what this means... Personally also here I´d say that the chances of having a professional factory making them this exact same are much higher than someone reproducing them with such likeness. At the moment I don´t have a 59 B casting of the Cobra around as I only have A and C ones right now so I can´t verify this but big chance those irregularities come from the original mold and thus are found on more 59 B Cobra casts. So from that perspective there is again a sign that these might be something special but that doesn´t change a thing to the fact that it´s impossible to get this verified at the moment. Which is the reason we held of on this to begin with. It´s clear these are not regular Stone Cobra´s, there´s no doubt about that, but it is (still) questionable what they are exactly and with that the option of reproduction remains open as well because none accept someone from Takara is able to tell what they might be and that´s not very likely to happen.

I´d wish we´d more insight information about this but when it comes to these Japanese exclusive figs there´s more ??? than actual knowledge based on harsh facts so if you don´t want to take a risk stay on the safe side and go after a certain normal Stone Cobra once one shows up if not than it might be worth a shot, it´s up to you.

Good luck!

I was just thinking that the winner of the unpainted stone cobra auction could have painted them. I completely see what you are seeing and I appreciate it. I am still holding off but I might take the gamble just for fun... Disposable income and all  ;)

The seller is a well known... scammer. The seller on ebay has made reproductions of other toys before and has sold them as "prototypes". All of these other pieces are well known and documented as fake... and made by the seller. When he listed the unpainted, hand painted, even the production ones... all are suspect in my book (esp the prototype ones). This person has caused a lot of issues before and will continue on doing so. Stay Away

Sharkbic ?  Forgot full name in Japan. I would stay clear from anything they have. I think they have listed 3-4 Regular Stone Cobra. 1 All White. 1 Hand Painted. Also seeing some other Japanese sales sites popping up with more Stone Cobra's. Would love to get my paws on a fake to test around to find out but... not at those prices.

Totally agree with you and from our end there´s sadly enough not a whole lot we can do about it apart from being aware and warn fellow collectors for this threat. The current number of Stone Cobra´s around is at least remarkable knowing the limited amount normally showing up over a period of a year or more but that number has already been reached in a couple of months. So there´s definitely something going on but not all the listings came from the same seller so is there a chance he´s been listing them under other seller accounts as well?

Heard from a connection in Japan that they´re not allowed to name items as FAKE, COPY or REPRODUCTION so in order to cover this issue up they tend to be listed as unknown, prototype or something else vague that we, or fellow collectors, might be triggered by simply because of the pictures in combination with the translation result we get.

It´s just hard to tell from the pics and there might be some good ones going round as well but at those rates none obviously wants to take the risk getting burned. We´ve seen reproductions and fakes causing serious problems before and I´m afraid it´s a matter of time that´ll happen here as well...

If they keep popping up like this prices will drop, whether it´s original or not, and than we might be able to try and see what´s up with these fakes but as long as none of us has one in hand be aware!
