Video games - PC, I use emulators as well.

Mainly have Kinnikuman/MUSCLE stuff, but I also have some GI Joes and a custom painted MOBAT I found at a model show.

During a lot of the time I was inactive on here I was looking into building my own PC alongside my uncle since all but my sister and her fiance's computers (a Sapphire from 2007 in her e-machine and a XFX Radeon HD 7950 in his build) have only integrated GPUs (the weak ones built into the processors). And seeing that I'm mostly ditching consoles after the PS2 era I needed an upgrade in order to play a lot of the really deamanding games as well as emulators for the PS2, Gamecube and Wii.

I don't have any of the parts yet for what's to be called the "Red Comet" since my uncle's getting them for me, but it's easily going to be a solid ~$750 build ( Doesn't include a $130 montor, $30 Keyboard and a $10-25 pair of speakers) that'll easily perform 3x faster than my current laptop.

Watching old anime as if it's in style, since whatever is trending nowadays just wouldn't suit me at all.

My graphics card is worth nearly that much. I lucked out though, my dad bought the wrong card, so he went and bought the right one and gave me the "wrong" one.

Have you considered adding a small solid state drive to boot your operating system and applications from? My latest pre-built PC came with Windows installed on a 64GB SSD, and it loads up really quickly. I'd wager it extends the life of the PC too, since you're limiting wear and tear on the hard drive by not using it to boot from.

some good points, though I'd recommend getting at least a 256GB SSD if you do a lot of gaming. Incidentally, I was just hard drive shopping last night and after a bit of research and deliberation I decided to pick up this Crucial 256GB at just north of $100.

3 years ago I bought a 120GB SSD to use as my primary partition and I've run it's capacity to the limit. Consider that 40GB is not an unusual size for many modern games with high-res textures. For me, a few games combined with all the Adobe programs I use and I'm constantly having to monitor my usage of that drive.

The main annoyance here is that I've had to install additional programs/games onto other drives, which in some cases can cause issues with data and/or player file locations. I've also had a few errors pop up through Windows that were results of this. IMO It's just easier to have everything installed on one drive, and cost is low enough for a 256GB drive that it's worth it.

Another consideration for SSD is that they're apparently much more difficult to recover data from if you ever have a failure and have to go down the path of sending it to a recovery service, but yes they should be more reliable (though I've heard arguments). So at this time, the common recommendation seems to be to keep file archives on standard HDDs but run your OS and programs from the SSD. Cost is obviously also a factor in this, as SSDs larger than 1TB get in the $1k+ range, whereas a 3TB HDD is about $150.

For speed though it's a no-brainer, there's no reason to build a rig these days and not install your primary partition on an SSD.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't recommend an SSD for storage purposes, unless you're made of money. These days you'd be wanting probably 1TB of storage minimum, so that means a regular hard drive for games etc. I have Windows 8 which is about 20GB I think, so a 64GB SSD is more than adequate as my C: drive. Everything else gets stored on D: which is just a normal 2TB HDD.

for storage, if you have the extra bay space I'd recommend two 1TB drives in a mirror RAID for files instead of a single 2TB, or if you don't want to mess with RAIDs at the least use the second as a backup for the first. I'm going through a data recovery nightmare right now so I keep reminding everyone how important it is to backup your stuff. Best case scenario, I'll recover 95% of my lost photo archive and be out $300; I don't want to think of the worst-case scenario :/

I have considered an 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD combo, but decided to go with a 2TB SSHD/Hybrid that was cheaper instead since I feel the need to have 1 drive dedicated all of the programs and such.

Sorry to necro this after a year of nothing, but since I last posted I got some of the very minor parts as well as the massive chassis that I won in a giveaway.

Still no dice on anything else for the time being, although I might look to get certain things on my own accord like the drives and RAM although it'll take a while since I still don't have a job. I updated the parts list to to be more bang-for-buck which makes all the remaining parts for the computer itself around the mid $600 mark. I also decided that with the black behemoth that is the Core X9 the color scheme I'd end up with would be more appropriate for Warsman than Char Aznable.

I also made a brief video a while before these pics that showed how it lights up as of now with another computer's guts in it.
