People also tie up traffic to gawk at an accident.... doesn't mean it's a good thing.

Who complains about free entertainment?

OK, I need to chime in here. I am a video game collector first. I love toys, but retro games are my passion.

Personally, I only collect Korean region stuff because they are fun to hunt down and extremely hard to find. I won't go into the history of Korean retro gaming much, but it's quite interesting.

That being said, the retro gaming community is not going anywhere, nor is any of the hardware. There are modern companies developing modern clone systems to play the old cartridges. There are groups who develop NEW games for old systems using NEW PCB boards and chips. For example, I just purchase a Famicom cart with 14 games dumped on it that were translated to Korean.

Going with the wasted space thing, that's the exact thing my parents said to me about my toy collection when I was still living in the states haha. I could just have pictures of all of my toys and still SEE them. Of course this is stupid logic, but you could say the same thing about video games. There is something aesthetically pleasing for some to have the games all on the shelf and have a small personal museum/library. My collection has some of the rarest games in the world. I even have a Korean Famicom game here that has never been dumped into a rom. So there goes the emulation argument :-)

Also, emulation is not the same. There are very very minor things you lose in emulation. Try playing Mr. Gimmick for the Famicom with original hardware, on a high end broadcast monitor with an RGB modified system. Then play that same game on an emulator. Or watch a chiptune artist showcase their music on an original pro-sound modded Game Boy vs. Someone who uses emulation through a computer. There is a lot of magic that is lost in emulation. Even minor things like response times between when you hit the button and what happens on the screen (we are talking milliseconds, but this matters for some people).

TLDR: Stop hating on retro games yall. Some of us have a passion for it, and it's not fun to knock others for having fun :-)

This rant is probably super unorganized and my arguments probably have tons of holes in em, but I just wanted to get that off my chest haha. Good vibes to all though!

good post.

i definitely find the Korean famicom interesting.

a while back i really got into Japanese Famicom titles. I even made myself my own converter using an old gyromite cart with the converter in it.

when i was young my favorite arcade games was the Goonies and when i finally got my Goonies II cart i couldn;t believe what i was playing, it was terrible. long story short about 25 years later i found out they made that and one of my other favorite arcade titles (Yie Ar Kung Fu) for famicom.

after that i was hooked. i even got into some PAL (Smurfs, Ghostbusters, Dragonball, etc..) and found out how to clip the pin in my NES that locked these PAL titles out.

the Ghostbusters game is amazing and im not sure how it never found it's way to the States.

outside of Goonies my favorite Japanese find has to be the Transformers game, PSYCHE! it's definitely the sports games that were made by the company that made one of my all-time NES favorites Dodgeball. Ice Hockey is great.

I know those sports titles you are talking about and they are all excellent! They are the only Famicom sports titles that hold any value.

Korean Famicom (It's called the Hyundai Comboy here, and looks exactly like the NES) is in a whole other league of weirdness. All standard releases, but the Hyundai branding and their rarity make them exciting to collect. Well I think so at least. Probably one of the most expensive regions to collect for due to rarity though :-(
