Gamera figure, anybody know where or how I can acquire one of these?

Best Answer BaltanII , 21 March 2014 - 09:23 PM

It's a West Kenji vinyl kit. I know that for Godzilla, the company had a similar set of smaller Godzilla characters in SD form sold as figures instead, but I don't know whether or not Gamera ever got the preassembled treatment. I would guess not, and that you'd have to either hope you can run into one easily on Yahoo! Japan or Mandarake, or settle for a recast kit like Metalmonkey brought up, and then hope you don't suck at models so you can build one as good as the promo image, haha.

I just did a yahoo search for gamera pictures and ran across this little guy.  Anybody know what the series is called or where I can get one?  I think this is an amazing piece, and I like turtles lol.

Its from the SD Gamera line, but more specifics I cant tell you. I thought it was a vinyl figure since Ive seen recasts of this guy selling on ebay (about $40 I think). Looks nice, I wouldnt mind one and an SD gyaos to go with it.

I know nothing about that figure except that it's pretty cool. But it's good to see you around, Doc!

Painting is another story! Should've clarified that's the part I meant.

I'm confused. When you say "vinyl kit," I'm guessing you mean it's a softer, more flexible plastic than the polystyrene that model kits are typically molded from? I've built many styrene kits--and actually finished a couple of them!--and I agree that painting can be a bit of a britch. So can decaling, especially if the decals are of large quantity or size, but one probably needn't worry about decals with the turtle.

Yes. I don't know if it's just more common in Japan or something, but I see soft vinyl kits of kaiju stuff all the time.

Must be more common in Japan...I've certainly never seen a vinyl model kit in a Stateside hobby shop (that I can recall, anyway).

Yeah Vinyl Models are huge in Japan, especially for Kaiju. Hell, Vinyl (Sofubi) is huge in their culture of toys.

Manga characters and Robots is where you usually see Resin or other Plastics, although ive seen Resin Models of Kaiju as well..

I used to see vinyl kits in comic shops all the time as a kid. I actually still have a Venom one and an Alien (from the Alien movie) that I never even started to attempt

Haha glad I'm not alone in that; I still remember my mom buying them for me and being all "Do you swear to me you're actually going to put these together and paint them?!" I think I was put off by how awesomely they were painted in the box photos that I was afraid to have a go at it. Probably one of the wiser choices I made as a 12 year old ;)

Thanks for all the info guys!!!!  I'm depressed to find out that I would have to assemble it and paint it myself.  In the picture it looked like muscle scale to me, I guess I was wrong.  Its still effing cool though.  I appreciate the posts.

Painting a big figure/model can be a massive job, but I find puttying/sanding figures is the least enjoyable part.
