It is a Jewish guardian made of stone that protects their villages according to the cartoons I have watched (whether that is accurate I don't know). He is probably worth $1 and is common.

Golems are made of inanimate materials, usually stone, or clay.

D&D has golems made from other materials, including chains.

And, yeah. Worth about a buck.

The original Golem was a Jewish Kabalistic legend most known for its appearance in a story that sprung up in response to the persecution in Prague, particularly "blood libel" - the ridiculous belief that Jews slaughter innocent boys and mix their blood in cookies.  It sounds silly, but many, many Jews have been murdered because of that lie.

Although there are Golem legends long predating the one in Prague, it is by far the most popular version (like Dracula being better-known than Varney the Vammpyre).  Anyway, the way the legend goes is, Rabbi Lowe prayed to God for a protector to save his people from persecution.  God told him to craft a man out of clay (in some legends - clay, hair, and blood), and write a secret word on his forehead (in some versions, put a scroll with instructions in his mouth).  But the stipulation was, when its job was done, Rabbi Lowe would have to erase the magic word from the Golem's forehead so it would die.  The Golem was a fearsome fighter, and destroyed the enemies of the Jews until they finally withdrew, giving those people some peace.  After it defended the Jewish people, Lowe found that he had to much compassion, and let it live.  However, with no enemies to fight, the Golem went on a rampage, attacking everything in sight.  Finally, Rabbi Lowe had to tearfully corner his creation and erase the words from its forehead, at which point it deactivated and fell to pieces.
