Well this is a ´known´ issue and when it comes to the numbers 1, 2 and even 3 (maybe even 4?) these are indeed ´replacing´ the A, B and C´s refering to the mold used but the whole issue with cavity, mold and numbers is much more complex than we might think and there´s no direct explanation for it since most of it also depends on where they´ve been released since that probably is the main reason why there is such a variety in the position of numbers, etc.
For example I did a quick check here and found a Polar Bear here which had number 3 but also didn´t show a figure number while I had two Kangaroo´s both showing a number 3 as well (on the same position) but both had their figure number somewhere else.....
It´s weird that some figures don´t have their actuall figure number on it but again there is no clear explanation to which figures this is applied and why.
I hope that in time, with the Beastformers Archeology project, we will be able to solve a part of this whole story but I doubt if we will ever find a true coherence in it since there is such a wide variety in these types of markings that it´ll become one hell of a task to figure it out.
Over here I know that some of the Bestias de Combate (Spanish Battle Beasts) show clearly different markings than some of the other BB that have been sold here in Europe, for North America this difference should also be there between the Beasts released in the US and Canada but than again that would be just the point where I´d start this whole research someday.
And another thing that I just noticed is that probably the cavity that´s shown on the figure in most cases might even have been the result of a forgotten number in the mold because looking at the Polar Bear and the Kangaroo on the pics above this is normally the position where the number would or could´ve been placed.........
It´s a to complex subject to give a clear answer at the moment.
