I've seen lots and lots of fan art, some good, some bad, always from the influences of the cartoons or the comics. I didn't grow up w/ the comics or the cartoons, none of us did. We all grew up having only the figures and our imaginations. But I've seen no fan art dedicated to the figures themselves. Certainly none making use of color scheme or negative space. So last year, I set out to remedy this. My goal: all 233+, captured on paper, in the colores that best express them.

Two months and eight sketches in,my goal was coming along well, but I wanted to speed things up. Then I got an idea: living in Texas, there are a lot of comic and sci-fi conventions that come through my area. So I took my sketch book, a bag of sharpie markers, and about 2 dozen muscles. Artists at the cons really liked the Idea, and several have told me that its the most original theme book they've ever seen. Some were free, some weren't , and some the artists insisted a no-charge, even w/ a sketch price posted. All of these I later added coloring. Between my own sketches, and the ones from the professionals, I had more than 40 pics by the end of last year. I'm already 12 pics deep this year; well on my way to 233+ in the colors that best capture their personalities.

With this good head start, I will post 2 new pics a week, until I get caught up. Then one pic a week thereafter. The first posted pic is My girlfriend's favorite figure, and she got me the sketchbook as a gift, so this one's fer her. Some of you may recognize it as my original avatar.

That is pretty sweet. Can you also post which artists did the pictures when you post a new picture. That is actually a friggin awesome idea!!! i wish I had thought of it. I personally would not color them in if the artist did not do it. I would leave it as an original. I am planning to start hitting comic cons now that I am not living in the middle of the desert anymore. too bad I am currently living in the middle of the Indian Ocean, but that is only temporary. Thanks for posting, and I really look forward to future pics. If I can make a request, Goriki, Claw, Buffalo man. if you have had artists draw any of those I'd love to see them.

Sorry about the delay on the second pic, had some difficulty making it fit. was trying to keep the resolution and color as good as possible. The sketches done by convention artists have black, mine are strictly no-black. If anyone wants to use any of the posted pics for their own web site, let me know, and i'll e-mail you a high rez version.

Glad you like, guys. The blue is done almost entirely w/ a bic pen, cross-hatched and squiggled. Unfortunately, the details are mostly lost @ that resolution. I'll hafta fiddle W/ the file to see if I can sqeeze more detail in. Or just do a headshot.

Okie dokie, here are my two pics that were supposed to be up last week.

Also, i've scanned higher res head shots of these two, as well as blue pharoah. I'll post if there's anyone interested.

This guy I always called sumo onion as a kid. he was one of my faves, and an easy choice to draw.

This other portrait is number 39, the skinny sunshine. I like this figure best in lite blue, and wanted to do something extreme w/ the background to contrast the blokiness of the figure. Enjoy!

I will catch up tonight, darnit! Okie, now that I'm past the self-scolding, I present for your viewing whatever, my angry-hot orange #225. Lotsa reds, yellos, and oranges (from concentrate) went into this pic. Including the plum background, 8 diffrent markers were used here.

factoid of uselessness: I generally lean heavily on sharpies as my figure markers, and almost always as the backdrops. Sharpie just came out w/ 5 new colors, upping the pallat to 17! oh, for joy!

The first of the two sketches for this week is the last one of mine in the book for about 15 or so pages (I'm posting them in the order they were drawn in the book). Skullduggery is just a red guy: I can't see drawing his figure in any other color. I did something completely different w/ this sketch, hope you like...

Now for what you guys have been waiting for! Muscle convention art from the pros! When I threw a dozen figures into a tupperware container, #181 was definately not the first I expected to be picked. And i sure didn't expect it to kick so much arse! Drawn by the Devil's Due penciler for Masters of the Universe!

I must say in the words of Darth Vader: Impressive. Most impressive.

Keep up the wonderful work! I really like your Sumo Onion :D ,and #181 is one of my favorites. I can't wait to see one of the Neptune Man figures. He is my all time favorite figure. The first one I saw when I dumped my first trash can. :D

I especially enjoy seeing the artist renditions. You should save those for special treats on like a monthly basis.

Top Notch!

Responding to some of the pm's Iv'e recieved on this topic, this project of mine isn't limited to my art and convention art. I welcome anyone to post their own interpretations of the figures here. Maybe Jkaris can put up a figure fan art gallery, or even a figure fan art contest. I would love to be a judge on that, lol.

The figure fan art doesn't have to be limited to 2-d. At the moment, I'm customizing one of the 13" rotocast movie hulks into the most beefcake buffaloman ever e+ He should be ready for posting in about a month or so.
