It sounds interesting...I couldn't get the web page to work right so I gave up on it before I could read the whole thing or watch the video. Isn't there a gaming machine that has been released that stores ROM's in the memory that you can just directly boot up and play without having the old cartridge or disk? Seems like I read about a platform that did that, but I can't remember the name now. I have an emulator for my laptop (JNES), but it doesn't work for crap if you increase the screen size too much...it is an old one though so likely that problem has been taken care of. Anyone know of a better emulator program OR of the platform machine that I was talking about?

This actually plays the old cartridges.  Not just one of those emulators systems that comes pre-loaded w/ games.  Stuff like this have been around for a while, but I have never seen one that had the ability to play so many system games.

Weird I was just reading about one of these last week, but it only played the famicom, not nes. I've been wanting one for awhile.

In the article it mentions a different one... that plays ALMOST as many games, but not quite as many.  But it also said that the previous one has really lousy controllers.  I believe in the middle of the article they have a video review of the previous model where they play Starfox and some other games.

Yeah, the one you are mentioning from the article is the Retron 5. I bought my brother a Retron 3 (NES, SNES, Genesis). The controllers are pure garbage, but the system is pretty good. It had ports for the old controllers, so as long as you have those, you are good to go. I feel pretty lucky. I kept all my old video game stuff, so I don't have to worry! And because of that, my bro has good controllers to use with his Retron 3.

I hate those retro all in one systems. I've heard some terrible things about the pin slots on the retron systems. Might not be something casual retro gamers notice though. On top of that, these things are just emulators that read carts. If something is already being emulated, I would rather just play on the PC or a PSP or something like that.

Original systems are not hard to find and are quite cheap if you are patient and find a good deal.

Also, Hyperkin has been accused of stealing the emulation codes for their systems from other developers. Shady shady stuff.

So the emulations ARE pre-loaded then?  And what happens... the cart just triggers which emulation code they activate?

I'm not up on the science of these things.  I always thought that the ones that accepted carts were different than the ones that came pre-loaded with games.

Now I'm  curious about the differences!

I'm not too knowledge about the details of this sort of thing, but the way these machines work is that they have the emulator on a chip pretty much in the system that allows it to read the cart. Unlike the original systems which have it's own ram chips, graphics cards, sound ships, etc etc.

I guess these sorts of machines are great for the casual player, but they drive me nuts haha.

I've always thought they were awesome alternatives to owning the originals. I've never seen one in person to know how well they work though.
