I have looked at about half of the submissions for Series 4, and so far they seem to be overly saturated in pun related entries. I mean there were some submitted (and produced) before this, but it really seems to be getting out of hand. I can easily see the line start to go from "outlandish" to more of a "cartoonish" jokey vibe. Which isn't necessarily bad, but just not what I was expecting with these figures.

Has anyone else noticed this? Do you think it isn't a big deal? Does it say something about people's creativity in general? I have never sculpted or created a toy from scratch; so maybe puns are just a great way to go about creating a new character?

Don't worry, they will have 500 votes from the same IP Address for the worst designs anyways...

Along with the idiots (See Crazy Man Rant Thread Elsewhere) running the show at October Toys, my interest in the line has waned.

Sorry you guys feel this way about OMFG... I love the line! There are figures in all 3 waves that I love and figures that I could care less about but that's part of the democratic process.

As for the puns, I think that is partly an homage to the MUSCLES and Garbage Pail Kids of the 80s. Personally, I prefer more original designs and less GPK but I can see why GPK/SLUGs styling is popular.

I think the puns have less to do with being a homage to the 80's, and more to do with trying to follow the trend of what has won in the past. Submission threads turn into big inside joke contests.

I want to see more Multiskulls, and a lot less Shirtles and angry juice boxes.

I think it's a lot harder to come up with a bad-ass concept that resonates with people, than doing a goofy one-off. I mean, with my project with Eric, I look back at the ones that I did, and I'll be the first to say: Some were "hit", some were "miss". It's a lot tougher to design the next Skeletor or Mumm-Ra, than it is to design the next California Raisin.

I think there have been a lot of cool designs submitted so far. Not sure what my top 5 would be, but Living Candle and Wooly Wisp are a couple of my favorites.

I think the puns for some designs are just an attempt to give them a catchy name. Some designs probably started with the pun in mind first, like Bull's Eye, but that doesn't make it a bad design. I don't really care about the names. I just vote for the 5 that I think would be cool mini-figures and hope that I like at least 3 of the winning figures each time.

I kind of want that to be a bumper sticker.

And it is a good example to help me clarify my point. Because I like Skeletor and I like the California Raisins, but they are from totally different toy lines. Jokey and pun figures are fine, I was just thinking/hoping this line would have more non gimmicky figures.

I just vote for the 5 that I think would be cool mini-figures and hope that I like at least 3 of the winning figures each time.

That sounds likes a solid strategy to me.

When the figure is sitting on my shelf, keeping dust off the floor, the name doesn't matter - its all about the looks. But as ironmask alluded too, I do get the sense that a person has to have a catchy name or back story to be competitive in the voting. If someone were to sculpt a miniature Boba Fett (or insert your favorite toy), but named it "Chad" and only posted it once - would it get any attention in the voting? Who knows?

I'm still enjoying this line; I'm just surprised by the direction it is taking.

I like one of the Living Candles haha.

The puns have been flying around. Tis why I tossed out Axeswipe and Axe-to-Mouth haha.

I like one of the Living Candles haha.

Your design has my vote. Your sculpt for S2 had my vote too, so it's cool if you are still working on the sculpt yourself.

Bull's Eye is a funny one to me because I don't think the designer of it hasn't posted at all for S4, but there are at least 3 sculpted versions of it out there.

I really like the first series. I didn't really like series 2 and series 3 is looking disappointing. I can only hope series 4 looks good.

I liked Series 1 a lot, Series 2 didn't do much for me, but I'm liking the look of Series 3 a lot.

Yeah, I'd be pretty pissed if people were biting my shit, especially in the same contest.

I noticed that during OMFG 2, there were a lot of incestuous ideas, or at least a lot of mutations on common themes.

No, no. The guy that drew it stated he couldn't sculpt it and offered it up to sculptors. It is crazy that three different people found it interesting enough to sculpt without it being a series winner.

Now I did have someone making different versions of Living Candle without talking to me about it.

I can understand teaming up for a REALLY GOOD concept.. . But I think it's a lot of people just throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks.

I got really annoyed, when I posted Hell Turtle for OMFG2 and got emails asking if others could sculpt him... And I would tell people that I already intended to sculpt him, and people would get belligerent with me, and half-assed threaten to sculpt him anyway. I was not a fan of the experience.

I think it's mainly that 90% of the designs are derivative and deeply unoriginal.

I always have fun in the submission threads ("Hey, that looks just like...")
