So we had this discussion with PF about horse meat at the Alan Maskbox sometime ago. Dont remember how it got started but there i got the idea that, hey, actual horse steak might be good!
We have this "sausage" slices that have horse and pork in it and its very common as bread topping around here...
anyways i was at at the meat store and saw these horse ouside file(i think the translator joking with me here) and decided to give it a shot.
The meat was pretty darn good i just spiced it with imple salt and pepper and fried it on the pan to a medium rare. It tasted lot like beef actually but having a slightly MILDER taste wich really surprised me.
Heres the raw meat wich looks like beef exept that its little darker.

And here is the finished product:

And as you may notice i didnt let the meat rest long enough since theres lots of fluid from the meat. Still wasnt dry luckily(unlike the second one that was bit over cooked and dryish)
So yeah, for all of you that wonder what horse tastes like
Also was there a thread for food recipes here? I could throw the recipe there if so it might be easier to find.

Looks good dude. The meat looks very similar to buffalo in it's lack of fat. Very lean. If I was there, I'd gladly take that other steak off your hands!

this is consistent with my brother's report after he had horse somewhere in Japan. I wouldn't mind trying it sometime, hell I ate whale sashimi last time I was there so I've already crossed the socially acceptable mammalian meat consumption boundary
Why don't you start a LRG recipe thread?
I'd contribute to this now and then, I have a pretty killer stuffed mushrooms recipe.

Whale.. id like to try that! The most exotic fish ive eaten was tradiotionally prepared shark(cooking method: rotting ) the taste was undescribeable. And yeah post the mushroom recipe. I make mushrooms filled with spiced cheese and paprica inside and rolled up in bacon and the just toss em to the grillI wouldn't mind trying it sometime, hell I ate whale sashimi last time I was there so I've already crossed the socially acceptable mammalian meat consumption boundary I'd contribute to this now and then, I have a pretty killer stuffed mushrooms recipe.

I am vegetarian so I've never eaten beef (or horse for that matter) unless you count that one occasion when I had a nibble of my girlfriend's cheeseburger (not a euphemism you dirty minded swines) which she couldn't finish. So I won't be following your recipe. However I don't really understand why horse meat is considered taboo by so many people, for me there isn't much difference between a cow and a horse, and horse meat is leaner and apparently tastier. People should probably eat more horse, especially if it's the last few useless nags I've put money on.
Same goes for dogs too. I have people on Facebook and the like who eat chicken, pork, beef etc until it's coming out of their ears, whining about foreigners eating dogs. Hypocrisy much? And if it's the little four-legged bastards who keep shitting on the pavement outside my house, I'd happily cook them up myself.

The taboo on both of those animals is pretty much how horses and dogs have been considered companion animals since Roman days. Just something that Europe beat into the rest of us. We are taught at a young age that both those animals are cute.

I would eat basicly any animal i got a change to, sure i understand in some cultures certain meats are banned but the hypocrazy you mentioned pisses me off.
Id eat any meat with likely exeption of human wich i propably wouldnt eat. Or perhaps follow mad cooks instruction of the most human, way to eat human. Also pet dog might feel wrong especially if they leave their puppy eyes on as a delight like on fish hahahahah but dog raised for food or sick or wild, why not, ive heard the meat is very chevy but still id give it a shot
And come on i laughed so hard on the nibbing some nibble part but you boring bug spoiled my fun at the end of the sentence hah..

There's a special evolutionary bond between humans and dogs that sets the line there for me. I've pretty much always had a pet dog throughout my life so maybe it's a conditioned bias, but I've also always had a cat and I wouldn't feel as guilty about eating a feline. They're kind of pricks, even when they're good pets. I've also heard mountain lion is very tasty and healthy. Dogs just exhibit that unconditional trust and loyalty thing...man I just couldn't do it.
Then there's the belief in some cultures that dogs should be mercilessly beaten just before before slaughtering them as a way to improve the quality of the meat. Something about the stress reaction making it more tender/flavorful, as opposed to other kinds of meat where stress induces an adrenaline response that ruins the flavor/texture. Disturbing stuff to say the least.

Strangely enough I got into a conversation about this recently with my Mother. I tend to lean a little more into the I'll eat (or at least try) whatever you put in front of me. SO I was making the "why not horse, dog etc" argument. AT least for her, it has something to do with what she felt the level of intelligence of the animal was. Which is interesting, because I had never thought of it that way or heard someone express concerns about that.
She felt that horses were more intelligent than cows and thus the taboo...

I've actually been telling this to people for years when they ask why I don't eat pig. People think I'm nuts for not eating bacon.

You are nuts. If there is any type of godly being, they/he/she/it created bacon. Fact.
Also, there is all kinds of studies showing that pigs and cows are both fairly intelligent creatures, and probably not more or less in comparison to dogs or horses.
I understand that eating animals isn't something that the human race can possibly sustain on this rock, but that doesn't mean that they aren't absolutely delicious.

In forensic testing, pig flesh is the closest thing to human flesh, so they use it a lot in testing wound patterns, etc.
Maybe people love pork so much because we are all secretly cannibals deep down.
Hannibal Lecter was on to something!

you're both right
but yes, the pig circumstance throws the whole intelligence thing out the window. This is why I have to go the "dogs and humans have an ancient partnership" route to entertain my emotional bias heh
