The next generation isn’t going to be cheap -- but it’s going to be cheaper on the PlayStation 4.

On the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that the Xbox One would be priced at $499, Sony has confirmed that the PS4 will cost $399, a full $100 less. It's due out this holiday.

Undercutting the Xbox One’s price was just one of the many shots Sony took at Microsoft at its annual E3 press conference.

SCEA president Jack Tretton also announced to raucous applause that the PS4 would put no restrictions on used games, letting players play used games and loan titles to friends -- a point driven home by this scathing promotional video:

Additionally, Tretton said, the system will not require any form of internet connectivity, a direct shot at Xbox One’s convoluted online connection requirements.

“If you enjoy playing single player games offline, the PlayStation 4 won’t require you to check in online – and it won’t stop working if you haven’t authenticated within 24 hours,â€￾ said Tretton.

Not all the news will make gamers applaud so loudly, though. Sony will require players to subscribe to PlayStation Plus in order to play online multiplayer. (Current PlayStation Plus accounts will carry over to the system.)

Unlike Microsoft, which focused exclusively on games and kept conversation to a minimum, Sony gave gamers a broader look at the PS4, discussing the system’s entertainment-focused elements.

Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Entertainment and Sony Pictures, appeared to announce plans for his divisions to provide content that is tailored specifically for the gamer audience on the console.

“Sony Pictures is hard at work on a brand new original programming plan and unique access to content that will be available exclusively on PlayStation Network and PlayStation 4,â€￾ he said. “Importantly, all new and existing programming we provide to PlayStation Network will be tailored specifically to the type of entertainment gamers want and love. … Sony Pictures will do everything in our power to drive the success of PlayStation 4 by developing cutting edge programming.â€￾

Sony had plenty to say about games, though -- both big and small.

The company shined some of its spotlight on independent games, highlighting several that will be available on the PS4, including Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Ray’s the Dead and New ‘n’ Tasty, a remake of the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee.

Big titles were what fans cheered loudest, though, with Sony giving advance looks at several of them.

The company revealed a new action title from their Santa Monica Studio (famous for creating the God of War franchise) called The Order: 1886. Third-party publisher Square-Enix announced plans to bring Final Fantasy versus XIII (now renamed Final Fantasy XV) and Kingdom Hearts III to the system. Bethesda will not only develop The Elder Scrolls Online for the system, but is offering an exclusive beta. And original Halo developer Bungie gave an first extensive look at Destiny, which is coming to the PS4 next year.

Sony itself said it has 30 PS4 games in development internally, with 20 coming out in the system’s first year. 12 of those 20 will be new IPs, said Shu Yoshida, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide.

A lot of backlash on the Xbox one. I think they made a huge mistake.

Sony mopped the floor with their press conference and secured my $$ for day 1 purchase.

Yeah, I think the PS4 is easily the system to beat this time around.  They learned from their mistakes with the PS3, and also from the mistakes Microsoft has made with the Xbox One.  At this point, they seem focused on the GAMERS, and that's a biggie right now.  Microsoft is in the position that Sony was after the PS2, thinking they can do no wrong, and they will ultimately suffer for it.  Oh well, I'm just glad that Sony is back on their game, delivering what the consumer wants right from the start.

(CNN) -- At a coming-out party for its upcoming PlayStation 4 console, Sony leveled its guns at rival Microsoft's Xbox One device and fired until the chambers were empty.

During a press event Monday night at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Sony hammered home key points about its new gaming system: Sharing games will be free. If people want to sell used games, that's fine. And a near-constant Internet connection, meant to monitor game usage, won't be required.

In other words, the PS4 will do many things the new XBox apparently cannot. Oh, and the PlayStation 4 will sell for $399 -- $100 less than the Xbox One. Both consoles are expected this fall in time for the holiday shopping season, setting up a battle for the hearts, minds and wallets of the gaming community.

A big point of contention among gamers is that Microsoft's new Xbox will require an online check-in every 24 hours (less than the "always-on" mode gamers expected) and will only allow games to be resold at selected retailers. Games may be shared only among a limited number of friends and family members.

Microsoft's daily check-in is designed, in part, to make sure users haven't resold, traded in or given away a game they've already downloaded on their consoles. The idea is to prevent more than one person from effectively owning a game that was purchased only once.

After rolling out a list of new games, Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, essentially went down a laundry list of complaints about the new Xbox, which had been showcased earlier Monday, and promised the opposite.

Read: Fans air concerns about new PlayStation, Xbox

"In addition to creating an amazing library of new titles on PlayStation 4, we're equally focused on delivering what gamers want most without imposing restrictions or devaluing their PS4 purchases," Tretton said. "For instance, PlayStation 4 won't impose any new restrictions on the use of pre-owned games."

That announcement got a loud and sustained round of applause from an E3 crowd not always easy to impress.

"I guess that's a good thing," a smiling Tretton replied.

In game-console terms, digital-rights management is a code that allows users to access a game's content. It's designed to assure developers and publishers that only the person who paid for the game, and close family and friends, can play it.

Sony and Microsoft aren't the ones that would benefit from DRM, or used-game restrictions. Game publishers want to make sure they are getting paid for their work, and that includes the secondhand market.

In the weeks leading up to E3, Microsoft had sought to calm gamers' concerns with a series of blog posts that some felt nibbled around the edges of rights-management issues but never offered definitive answers.

Sony then was conspicuously quiet in what, now, appears to have been an orchestrated effort to lower the boom at E3.

Witness the "Official PlayStation Used Game Instructional Video" released shortly after the presentation. It's 22 seconds long and features only "Step 1," a man handing a disc to another man.

That cheeky video had racked up more than 1.5 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours.

Microsoft did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request seeking comment. But online pundits were quick to praise Sony for landing some blows against its rival.

"As crude as it is to declare a company the 'winner' of E3, it's hard to see Sony's presentation today as anything but a PR coup ... ," Kyle Orland, senior gaming editor at CNN content partner Ars Technica, wrote Monday.

"Among some of the most influential and hardest-to-please gamers on the Internet, Sony is now the savior company that can do no wrong. They should enjoy the ride, which will last just as long as it takes for them to do something wrong."

Writing for Time, Jared Newman takes a longer view. Sony's move is meant to preserve the future of disc-based games, at least for now, while Microsoft stands ready to kill discs entirely, moving to an almost entirely digital model, he said.

Playing to what's already comfortable for gamers was clearly part of Sony's strategy, Newman said.

"Sony is just betting that the good will of gamers will be enough to cut Microsoft's ambitions short," he wrote. "And Microsoft has some big ambitions, not just to be the best game console, but to serve as the central hub of all living room entertainment.

"It's a gambit on Sony's part, one that's going to make the console wars even fiercer."

I really want to get the PS4 for the system, but i want to get the XB1 for the games... I have always bought my systems because of what their exclusives are. And Unfortunately i find  myself looking more forward to XB1 games more than the PS4.   What i need to do is sit down and figure out the positives and negatives from my own perspective and figure out which one i want. The games though are the huge thing for me. Hell, Assassins Creed was the reason i went with Xbox 360 in the first place (it was originally supposed to be a Sony exclusive but didnt get the development team a trial system or whatever it was back in the day if i remember correctly).   This might be the first time in my history of gaming that i might pick up both systems and ive been gaming since my old man walked in with an Atari 2800.

What are the exclusive games for PS4?  I know God of War (which is fantastic) and Gran Turismo (not a big fan of realistic racing games) but what are others?  I know that Sony in general has better rpg games too.

You're playing your favorite new game on XboxOne with your buds.....

You're at a crucial point in the game battling the last boss where all attempts have failed.....

Finally... you're about to beat the bastard....

Troll friend in the background yells '' XBOX OFF! ''

This has never actually happened. This joke has circulated since Kinect was first made, unless they've done something new with the Xbox One. People have tried this a thousand times in my house alone to no avail.

Although I 100% agree that Microsoft has screwed the pooch on this one. Sony just doesn't make quality products, so I will be focusing my efforts on PC gaming and Nintendo. Even if I wanted a PS4, their controllers are absolutely shit and unusable for anyone above the age of ten. (Assuming you have average or large hards).

Nintendo is doing what all these other companies should be doing: Making a video game console to play video games on. Why do I need something that surfs the web, watches TV, and all kinds of other crap on it? It's a waste of time, money, and resources.

Thankfully, my computer only needs a bit of ram to be faster. So I'll likely take the money I would've spent on the Xbox and put it into rebuilding my machine into a tank of a PC.

This doesn't really affect me at all. When I have company over I don't play videogames unless we can all play it (Rockband). I really only turn my console on when my wife is at work and I'm bored. And with limited funds I usually buy the system with the better (in my opinion) exclusives. Watching Sonys E3 presentation didn't really give much insight on their games, and having been out of the playstation loop for about 7 years I'm not really sure what games they have to offer.

I was just kidding with the Xbox Off joke. It would be pretty funny if that worked though.  :p

Honestly, even with all the negatives from the Xbox One, I know I'll end up buying one. Just not at 499$US.

Microsoft still has time to rethink their strategy and, hopefully, make a few changes/adjustments prior to release. I mean, they must read what people say online, right?

Yeah, which is why one of their top smartasses addressed concerns about needing to be connected to the internet to play, saying that they have a product for those without internet connection, the Xbox 360.  Seemed like a real douchebag comment to make, but oh well.  They really need to make some changes if they want to stay in the game this coming generation.  I've never seen such lopsided support for one console over the other before.

I thought about preordering a PS4, but I'm thinking I might wait a bit.  Right now I'm going through the Mass Effect trilogy, and I can't believe I waited so long!  Those games are amazing!  After that I may grab The Last of Us, and then of course there's GTA V.  That one I imagine will take a while to get through, so I will likely grab a PS4 after I do as much as I can in the game.  Destiny is the game I really have my eye on at the moment anyway, and it doesn't look like that will be out until 2014, so I have time.

It's strange how Microsoft have been giving half-assed answers to the public. It's like they're trying to avoid giving out the truth even though people already know what they're trying to do. I wasn't aware of that said comment though. It does sound ''doochie''.

They did so well with the 360. What the heck happened?

Aside from exclusive titles. It boils down to this...

1011902_382867315150933_128711484_n_zpsd

And OMG! The Last Of Us! That game looks incredible! I pre-ordered it online but with a Friday release (wtf?), I'm not sure I'll get it in time for the weekend. If I do though, I'll be spending a few hours playing it after the Onell drop tomorrow night for sure.

Cripes!  I didn't know there was a drop tomorrow.  Thanks for the heads up!  I put off pre-ordering The Last of Us, so I'm not sure on what DLC I'll be missing out on, but the more I think about it the more likely I am going to just go in and pick it up in the morning.  I really does look too good to pass up!

Right now I'm going through the Mass Effect trilogy

You will love the entire series until the ending of the third game. At which point your jaw will likely hit the floor in utter disbelief that that ending is actually the real deal, and not a joke.

Take it from an ex die-hard Mass Effect fan.

There could be other future installments of Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, and any other Sony exclusives afterwards.

I'm going for the PS4 as my console of choice, I might stick with PC gaming given I could get a computer more suitable for gaming than my cheap laptop in the future. I'm infuriated with Microsoft when it comes to consoles due to their horrendous Xbox Live Arcade policies that have patch fees and doesn't allow indie developers to Self-Publish (even a sole developer that's been around for over 20 years couldn't!), I hope the greedy ingrates in the console department suffer this generation. I'd rather give Nintendo another chance with the WiiU (Gave the Wii & DS a chance, but was somewhat dissapointed) before I give Microsoft one with their Xboxes.

xbox one all the way for me. Sony is going backwards requiring disks to play the games. I havent used dvds for pc gaming in years. its all 100% online. xbox is going to the cloud, meaning that if i am at a friends house I will not need to bring my game, just login and play - just like my pc. seems as if all of my favorite games will be on both consoles but i am going to choose xbox, even though its $100 more, simply for the cloud feature. I didnt see any tech advances like this on sony's end. This isnt 2005. i could care less about the only online thing - all of my gaming is 100% online anyway and i do not buy used games or rent them. gamestop is a ripoff and i have no problem not supporting them.

additionally, kinect seems kinda cool. i doubt i will use it but maybe my son will. i also like the idea of this replacing my apple tv and a few other things around my tv. ive also had a really good experience with xbox live and heard they are getting 300 servers for their new network. i havent used psn for a few years so i cant really compare now but at that time isnt wasnt even close but it was also free. i also think the wiiu looks pretty cool for zelda/mario but i dont really have the money to buy all of them.

Edit: It appears that sony has the cloud too but it is limited compared to MS and will not be available until 2014. PS4 does require always online for online games, which i guess is a not brainer but are there even games that do not require you to be online? Also, publishers for PS4 can still stop used/traded games. idk, i guess im seeing both of these consoles are nearly the same. the difference in my opinion will be exlusives, kinect, multimedia, PSN vs xbox live. http://www.develop-o...omputing-in-PS4

i agree with this to an extent but sony and ms didnt release cheaper versions or upgraded versions of their consoles for over a year after their release last time around.

There could be other future installments of Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, and maybe ModNation afterwards.

I'm going for the PS4 as my console of choice, I might stick with PC gaming given I could get a computer more suitable for gaming than my cheap laptop in the future. I'm infuriated with Microsoft when it comes to consoles due to their horrendous Xbox Live Arcade policies that have patch fees and doesn't allow indie developers to Self-Publish (even a sole developer that's been around for over 20 years couldn't!), I hope the greedy ingrates in the console department suffer this generation.

don't forget the last of us  and the uncharted series.

Navy Lt. Scott Metcalf was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Xbox One. Now he’s not even sure if he’ll buy one.

Indeed, for many in the military, the next-gen Xbox console may offer more endemic frustration than grand epic gaming, particularly for those deployed downrange, aboard ships and stationed overseas.

Xbox One, Microsoft’s much-anticipated new console, got its big reveal at the Electronic Entertainment Expo gamers’ convention in Los Angeles. Company honchos are confident it will come to dominate living rooms over the next decade not only as the gaming delivery vehicle of choice, but also with a barrage of other content, including a suite of apps, streaming video and music.

There’s one big but, however: To get all this entertainment awesomeness, the console will have to check in online with the Microsoft mothership at least once a day.

“With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection,â€￾ an Xbox spokesperson tell Military Times.

Showstoppers

Metcalf called that a “showstopperâ€￾ for any service members who rely on their Xbox for off-duty diversions downrage, in the field, or at sea.

Which is to say, just about everyone.

And it gets worse for on-the-go troops. The Xbox One:

■ Can play only in Xbox One-friendly countries. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a regular, reliable Internet connection while overseas, you’ll have to be in one of 21 countries included in Microsoft’s server network. So, if you’re stationed in, say, Germany, Italy or Great Briatin, you’re good to go. But if you’re based in Japan, Kuwait or Afghanistan, you’re out of luck.

■ Will have region-locked games. Games bought in the U.S. can be activated only in the U.S. That means no more ripping open the latest title that just arrived in a care package from home while you’re deployed. And forget about buying games locally when overseas — if your Xbox Live account isn’t tied to the region when you activate a game, it won’t play.

■ Serious security concerns. Even when the Xbox One is in sleep mode, its built-in microphone can always listen in. It’s a feature developers say will provide quick voice-command access to games and apps — but that could spook commanders who might worry the always-connected device could also capture more than just idle chit-chat among troops.

“Microsoft has single handedly alienated the entire military. And not just the U.S. military — the militaries of the entire world,â€￾ says naval aviator Jay Johnson.

The Internet connection requirement is “the single greatest sin Microsoft has committed against all service members,â€￾ he writes in a post on the game developers’ site Gamasutra.

With tours aboard three Nimitz aircraft carriers, Johnson says he’s spent more than half of the past three years deployed or training at sea. He describes gaming in general and his Xbox in particular as “my sanctuary. It is where I went to calm down after a long day of flying.â€￾

But that won’t true with the Xbox One, he says.

“No longer will the sounds of Master Chief saving the human race echo through the hallowed halls of the USS Abraham Lincoln, or any other USS ship, when we have a few hours respite. No longer will you see Marcus and Dom sawing through the Locust Horde at the bases in Afghanistan after the Marines have returned from patrol and want to escape their reality for a bit. Those days are now firmly behind us.â€￾

Microsoft: Sucks to be you

Not to fear, says Xbox exec Don Mattrick, president of the Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment division. The company has a solution for those in the military: Just use the old Xbox 360 instead.

“Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity, it’s called Xbox 360. If you have zero access to the Internet, that is an offline device,â€￾ Mattrick told Game Trailer at E3 in an interview posted online.

He says he feels your pain, though.

“When I read the blogs and thought about who’s really the most impacted, there was a person who said, “Hey, I’m on a nuclear sub.’ I don’t even know what it means to be on a nuclear sub, but I’ve got to imagine that it’s not easy to get an Internet connection. Hey, I can empathize. If I was on a sub, I’d be disappointed.â€￾

OFFduty asked Microsoft officials if that empathy might translate into practical workarounds for the military.

“I don’t have additional details to share and can’t speculate on workarounds at this time,â€￾ wrote Xbox rep Danica Stickel in an emailed response to questions, repeating the suggestion that troops could just use the 360 instead.

“Although we’re very excited about Xbox One, we remain dedicated to Xbox 360 now and for years to come. In fact, we are expecting some of the greatest blockbusters of 2013 and 2014 to come out on Xbox 360.â€￾

She did offer some encouragement for Xbox One hopefuls, however, saying the regional lock restrictions aren’t much different from other content protections.

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games and other content must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale — which means that games will work in the broad geographic regions for which they have been cleared, much as today with Xbox 360,â€￾ Stickel wrote.

“While the console itself is not geographically restricted, a user’s Xbox Live account, content, apps and experiences are all tied to the country of billing and residence,â€￾ she wrote.

“Military personnel will be able to take their Xbox One and play their games with them without an issue as long as the game has been ‘activated’ once in the U.S. Your games go with you and play, no issues,â€￾ she says.

Stickel also downplayed security concerns over the console’s always-on microphone or built-in Kinect video camera.

“When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded,â€￾ she says. “You will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options.â€￾

But even those outside the military have been surprised by Micosoft’s shrug to the military community, with some speculating it will fuel a wider surge toward Sony’s Playstation console.

“This is shameful, says Joel Hruska, a writer for Extreme Tech website. “Telling troops that you ‘empathize’ with them is both embarrassing and hands Sony perfect ammunition.â€￾

“Do I think Microsoft is going to change?â€￾ writes Hruska in a recent post. “Honestly, no. The remarks that’ve come out to date paint a picture of a company that’s so drunk on its own Kool-Aid, they aren’t listening to outside criticism or commentary any longer.â€￾
