Just wondering if anyone can tell me anything about these guys... name, manufacturer, year?

Variations of these puppet faces have been around since at least the 60's, so it's hard to say when and where a particular one was manufactured or distributed. Generally I see them grouped into the same category as jigglers, rubber uglies, and the like. Experts on those subjects may be able to tell you more.

One of the more common variants did become famous as the mascot for the band Anthrax.

Personally, I remember getting these out of vending machines in the 80's. I also have this weird little machine that was found at a flea market a few years ago:

The finger holes on the backs of the puppets fit on to pegs that move and rotate when activated, making the faces contort while the figure dances. The axe lights up and it plays "The Saints Go Marching In" at a fixed and irritatingly loud volume.
At least it does that when it works properly. The motor in mine appears to be shot, so it essentially a loud statue at the moment.
