Hello there!

I tried to research the mythological origins for "Jabalius" and "Catarenha".

I guess "Beast of Gevaudan" and "Guardian of Gold" are fan-made translations for those monsters?
Because the "Beast of Gevaudan" is a werewolf and not a pig monster?!
I think somebody confused it with "Beast of Dartmoor" and "Beast of Dean" (which is a pig/wolf/cat monster).

My research so far:

Jabalius is derived from the Spanish word "Jabalí" which means "wild boar":
http://es.wikipedia....wiki/Sus_scrofa

So the best translation would be: Pigman or Wereboar.
If you google "hombre jabalí" you'll get pretty good results.

Maybe it's a Spanish / Mexican / Argentinian local legend?

There are several myths about "pigmen" or "wereboars" around the world:
http://warriorsofmyt...m/wiki/Wereboar

- Greek legend (Circe):

http://www.theoi.com/Titan/Kirke.html

- Kafre/Cafre (http://itsmth.wikia.com/wiki/Cafre)

- Pig-Man of Cannock Chase

- Pig-Man of Georgia

For Catarenha:
I think it has something to do with the Russian czardom and it's derived from the
Russian name Екатерина / "Katharina", "Ekaterina".

Behemoth is our resident MIMP master. Lots of guys around here know quite a bit but he's the first one that pops into my mind.

If anybody knows, I'll bet it's him.

Not me. I know the figures well, but am not versed on the mythology. Especially of the lost monsters.

I look forward to reading Wolpertinger's findings.

The Mexican Jabalius card specifically refers to it being a French monster, dates it back to the time of the Beast of Gévaudan, and the image is unequivocally that of a wolfman. It seems like someone has invented the name Jabalius and applied it to an existing mythical creature.

It's interesting that Catarenha is supposed to be a Spanish creature, since that word is clearly Portuguese in construction. In Spanish, the nh would be replaced by an n with a tilde: it would be written Catareña. It always reminded me a little of a sphinx.

Interesting! So it's the other way round?
Because I found several descriptions for them and I can clearly see Jabalius as a pig (snout, hooves):

JABALIUS

It is not known when nor where it was born. It is horrible, with aspects of a wild boar that
walks on two legs. It is thought that it is a lost link of human evolution. With its free hands
it does not use tools nor it does vacijas of mud, prefers to hang to its enemies with them.

Species: Animal
Born: 200 years ago
Size: 1.80 to 2.40 meters
Habitat: Mountainous regions of central France
It isn't like any beast you know. It walks on two human legs but is covered with reddish hair.
It is larger than a donkey but has smaller ears and a long tail.

CATARENHA
#1
https://groups.yahoo...ions/topics/208
It arose from the anything 5000 years ago in Russian steppes. It has the body of an animal and a
human head. It is very ugly and its character is insuffrable. One sees them run through the snow-covered Siberian prairies proffering insults to all aquelios that are crossed to them. It is an inoffensive monster.

#2
http://monsterinmypo.../wiki/Catarenha
Species: Animal/Humanoid
Born: In 1800
Size: 1.40 meters
Habitat: In the dungeons of Spain.
It always wears a purple cap made of silk. It was left to care for the valuable treasures stolen by pirates. Its heart is greedier than any human's. Be careful with your treasure!

So which ones are official?
Wolf / Pig and Russia / Spain are big differences!

And you're right!
It looks very similar to the Masonic sphinx:

http://en.wikipedia....emple,_Utah.JPG

http://www.panoramio.../photo/51480813

So maybe there's a small, subtle nod to the Free masons/Illuminati/Guardians of Gold conspiracy in there?
But I will do some research on Siberian mythology as mentioned in description #1...
