Just re-watching the pilot episode the the G1 series of Transformers and something occurred to me.  I wondered if the designs of cars and planes that they have BEFORE they land on earth (the planes look more space ship-esque and the cars are more shuttle-esque) and adopt to earth technology were ever made into toys?

For example - Bumblebee looks WAY different, but pretty cool too.  They ever do anything like that toy wise?

Hasbro never cared about covering the Cybertronian forms back in G1 and never made toys of any of those alternate modes. I mean, the cartoon didn't care enough to give any of them unique robot modes, so no big surprise there.

There are third-party (as in, not made by Hasbro or Takara and totally unlicensed) versions of the Starscream tetrajet design that were released within the past year by Impossible Toys. You can find the set of seven they made (original three seekers, the three coneheads, plus Sunstorm) on BigBadToyStore. Some of them are available for purchase separately, but Starscream, Ramjet and Sunstorm individual listings already sold out.

I've seen custom versions of the Cybertronian Bumblebee but nothing mass-produced that I can recall. If something exists, it's probably much harder to find these days.

Yeah, an exclusive kit sold at Wonderfest over two years ago, no one's getting their hands on one of those now. Not without someone stealing the design and mass-producing one of their own.

Sometimes a little less complex is a good thing.  Just saw the pics of that Bumblebee, thanks for sharing!

SO when I came to LRG - I had no idea about any sort of MUSCLE or LRG custom community... NOW I learn there is a whole Transformer custom community too?

The reason I mentioned that the design wasn't very complex is because once in a while, I get it in my head that I can make a transformer in autocad. I never finish them, but they are always simple. as fr the custom community, try looking up frenzyrumble on youtube. he made a g1 dinobot combiner, for crying out loud!

The third-party independent Transformers scene is like all the Glyos-compatible lines, but bigger and so much more expensive. If you were so inclined and independently wealthy, you could start on the eight unique sets of reimagined G1 Dinobots, several of which have the ability to combine. Or you could start on the actual combiners, like the two sets of Devastator (Hercules and Giant), the three different versions of Predaking (War Lord, Ares, Feral Rex), the Abominus that's starting soon, and so on. You can't possibly have the money to cover the years of merchandise out there, and the entitlement of those collectors is incredibly high for what are ultimately high-end bootlegs, but there's a lot of amazing things out there from a distance.

the Abominus that's starting soon

This is why I've been hardcore reeling in my spending. I am extremely on the fence about dabbling in 3P for this combiner alone.

Haven't watched it yet, but I did see that Vangelus put up a video on Troll, the not-Blot of Unique Toys's Ordin. Curious to check it out.

It is a bloody huge market.

I have never seen one in person though, and that's probably the second biggest factor for me not owning any yet, (first being price). I know when I get something from Hasbro that it will be half-way decent, (or should be), and if it isn't up to snuff they've always come through on that end too. These guys are all independent so I'm mostly worried that if I get it and it breaks, I'm out $100+.

I can definitely save my pennies for a $100 figure, but I can't save my pennies for a $100 that could possibly be a piece of junk.

Abominus is probably my third favourite combiner, so this Troll is an almost must-have for me.

Edit: Just sold my old computer rig. Not-Blot is getting pre-ordered. Oh boy.

I've had little contact with the third-party stuff myself, but what I can tell you is that at least half the time, quality of the figure isn't an issue and you're only going to end up breaking crap when it's a truly crappy company. I used to own the Fansproject Steel Core and still own their little Targetmaster guys Blesser and Sidearm, while also handling several of their other figures, and I also own the iGear Shafter (their version of Erector, exclusive to TFcon 2012). You can't go wrong with about anything FP. While Shafter was a perfect release itself, I know there are iGear releases that do have their issues, so you'd need to be attentive to individual reviews.

Mastermind Creations, TFC Toys, Dr. Wu, Maketoys - all of their work has been typically of great quality. Impossible Toys (the tetrajet guys) have had some subpar stuff in the past but the tetrajets are probably their best work. Some of their last too, unfortunately, since they're supposed to be closing their doors. Unique Toys (the guys doing Troll) are interesting in that a lot of their earlier releases were underwhelming, or outright sucked. Their not-Predaking, War Lord, was almost laughably bad in comparison to Ares or Feral Rex. Thankfully, the feedback on Mania King (Galvatron) was not so bad, and it has been even more positive for Salmoore (their version of the Go-Bots Cy-Kill). With Troll looking to be even better than those two, you seem to have picked a good third-party toy as your first.
