Hello everyone,

one of my cats got bitten by a spider that fell out of a box from America,
probably Californian.

Attached is a picture of it.
Is it dangerous or not?
And what species is it.

Only serious answers please, thank you,
greetings D.

Dysdera crocata
Family Dysderidae
"Sow-bug killer"

A mediterranean invasive, this spider is usually found under wood or bark.

Found it! Still have to check on poisonous or not,
but I don't think so. My cat got bitten in its nose,
and probably got a scare from it, but she's napping cosy right now ^_^

Found out on this website:

Dysdera crocata
Woodlouse Spider

Identification:
This spider usually can be distinguished from others by its smooth carmel colored body,
contrasting cream abdomen, and large fangs.
Habitat:
Largely nocturnal, this species occasionally can be seen during the day.
I have found them wandering on the lower levels of buildings and in the basements of homes.
Behavior:
The large fangs of this species allow it to pierce the protective exoskeletons of pill bugs and other arthropods.
While most other household spiders ignore pill bugs, this spider readily attacks them.

Poor little woodlouse ^_^

Woodlouse Hunter: Dysdera crocata

By Judy Sedbrook, Colorado Master GardenerSM , Colorado State University Cooperative Extension, Denver

The name "Woodlouse Hunter" comes from this spider's preference for woodlice, also known as pillbugs or roly-polies. Dysdera have large, strong fangs that can pierce the hard body of the pillbug and other arthropods. They also hunt other prey that may be found in their dark, moist environment.

Dysdera have a cream-colored body with reddish legs and cephalothorax. Adults measure about ½-inch in length.

Largely nocturnal, this spider can be spotted during the day under stones, logs, and garden debris. When not hunting, the Dysdera makes its home in a silken retreat. This retreat is where the female lays her eggs after mating in April. As many as 70 eggs are laid and suspended inside the retreat, and the spiderlings stay there with their mother for a short while before venturing out on their own.

Although not agressive, the Dysdera is quick to defend itself from intruders. Its bite can be painful but the venom does not cause serious medical problems.

Final Addendum:

Since it is a non-venomous or dangerous species,
I set him or her free in my back yard.

I hope he feeds on more annoying little critters than woodlice though,
since I kinda like those... :geek:

I know, I know, this whole thread now officially makes me a ^_^

Yep your da geek hahaha

United States from what I understand only has two spiders that are dangerous, the Black Widow, and Brown Recluse and that wasnt either of them. You already figured out your little guy is gonna be ok though so that is good.

Whats gonna happen is your non dangerous spider that you let go in your back yard is gonna breed and mutate with the local dangerous spider common in your area and create a new super spider that nobody can kill and it will wreak havoc all over your country. Just like that movie. Good job buddy, 2 years from now when half your country is dead, we will know it was you. ^_^

Don't forgot the hobo spider, on your list of deadly spiders, mean little sobs.

They're the ones to look for out west.

That's a nasty looking little spider. I am not found of spiders, but I will let them go if I know it's not poisonous. Spiders do a lot more good then harm for people. In my area, I live right by a bunch of corn fields, and the spiders in the fields love to feed on mosiquitos, which helps a lot during the summer months.

I am just glad to hear that your cat is going to be okay. Good thing you don't keep pet Pillbugs. They you might have had a problem. If you don't mind me asking, what did you get that had a spider in the box? I know it can be common to have insects in crates of fruit and the like. My fiance's grandparents who live in arizona, just recently ordered some plants for the inside of their house, and hiding in one of the plants was a scorpion. Now scorpions I am scared to death of.

Hah nothing poisonous in Finland really :) Exept one plant thats kind of like poison ivy.

I googled Finlands most dangerous animal and it appears to be moose because of the many roadkills they cause, saw a car once that had hit a moose it was a terrible sight tge seats were all torn up and there was blood everywhere
