I own some pretty boss comic art. Conventions are a good place to build up contacts. A lot of comic art dealers also deal toy package art as there's usually crossover appeal, not to mention a lot of artists worked in both industries.
I do remember seeing a small piece from the back of a MOTU figure by Dave Stevens recently from a comic art dealer but it was tiny, not very exciting, and $4k or so IIRC ( I might have it wrong but the piece was extremely underwhelming relative to price). For pretty decent money like that I want something that was on the front of the package at least!
I get that stevens gets a premium but he in particular usually gets a premium for work that has sexy females not MOTU roided up dudes!
I can recall seeing a couple MOTU painted card arts (fronts not backs) that went around 4k each but that was many years ago (6 or so) so it seems 'cheap' today. I know most of the GI Joe art is still with hasbro but 7-8 pieces are out, one went for about 20k (some vehicle) a while back. Transformers stuff is more out there with stuff going like 1-10k range from what I've seen and heard. Mostly on the lower end, 1-3k for the less well known ones and only the better known early ones for the big bucks with the really early ones like Megatron that would go for huge bucks (way more than 10k) unaccounted for because if I recall correctly the first year arts were lifted from the japanese toy line, so there is no north american art for the first year IIRC. If anybody is interested they put together a book on TF card art (should be out around now) that you can buy on amazon. I can recall a very small painting that went on the backs of the star wars figure cards going for 50k about 7 years ago. Quite a shocker as the painting was tiny and barely noticeable, but there's a big following for star wars I guess and all those cards have photos instead of art so I guess there is nothing else to be had.
What other figure art have you seen around?
But those are action figures generally - any intel on art from "little rubber guy" toy lines in particular? I get that there is probably not a ton out there, but if no one here knows, I'm not sure where else to ask at this point :/
