Mind if I inquire into what type of paints you are using?
I have dabbled with both normal tube acrylics & model acrylics, but none of my stuff turns out with as nice an overall color look.
I am sure its 99% skill and 1% paint quality, but I since I am lacking in the skill department, I need to augment wherever I can!
I use acrylic paints by Vellejo. They are made in Spain but I'm sure you can get them in the US.
The key factor when painting smallish figures with acrylic paint is not to use it too thick, keep the paint reasonably fluid and if neccessary build up layers. As a guide you should have enough paint on the brush tip at the right consitency to paint a thin line on a bit of paper for about an inch in one stroke. This will also prelong the life of your brushes before they eventually clog at the base and the bristles start to seperate. Basic five phase I use is Primer, base colours, dry brushing, washes if req'd and final highlights.
The more painting you do, you will find your own technique will gradually improve, don't be afraid to experiment. Check out also some of the tutorials on youtube, there are many.
