Guardians of the Galaxy is poised to be Marvel's next big franchise, there's good early buzz on the movie and Marvel is rolling out with a toy campaign as well. Along with the larger scale, Marvel Legends, figures they are releasing these mini figures in 3 or 2 packs. What I'm looking at today is the Groot, Rocket Raccoon and Sakaaran Trooper set.

What you get in a package are the 3 figures, a missile launcher and battle gear.

I'm not sure I know what to make of the "Battle Gear"

The figures are pretty simple with 5 points of articulation, head, shoulder and legs. (Weird Ball wrestler for size comparison)

With the exception of Rocket, he appears to be a simple slug figure with no articulation.

His gun seems to be a different piece glued in.
I like these figures for their simplicity. The figures themselves don't have any real gimmicks, it's the accessories that have functions. I always hated when the figure had an action feature that would break over time, Like the first Gambit figure by toybiz. Once his feature broke you're left with this figure that always has a leg stuck at the end of his high kick. But I digress, what we have here are simple articulated figures with a rocket launcher. Even the rocket launcher is bare bones, it's not spring loaded. It's one of those launchers where the projectile sticks out at the back and is launched by a finger flick, which again I'm ok with. Less moving parts less chance of breaking. The paint applications are pretty minimal, with Rocket being the most painted of the three, and with the minimal paint apps there isn't too much room for error. Which I didn't notice any glaring flaws on my figures except for afew crevices on Rocket's legs that didn't quite fill with the orange from his pants. Nothing earth shattering, I didn't notice it until I saw it in one of these pictures.

So what we have are these three small figures, a pretty big launcher and some "Battle Gear" for about 9.99.
These figures are not made for collectors, they're made to be played with. The figures are too small to stand and hold the gun straight, but that's not too much of an issue since the figures should be in some kids hand while they are holding the gun. The Battle Gear is made from a cool blue plastic, but again I still don't know what to do with it. One looks like it could be half a gun, and the other two look like wings. They seem to have these pegs and holes in them which can lead to some creativity, kinda like a poor man's gylos system which Hasbro seems o already be attempting with their Marvel Mashers series...

...I made a slightly asymmetrical jet pack, that would probably leave the wearer flying in circles.
And as I typed it I realized I put said "JET pack" on the guy made of wood. Ah well. After all is said and done, I like the figures. They're simple and won't break the bank.
