I fogot what Pumpinator's real name was, but as for "SHockidile..."

Literal Japanese- Sunigator.

Intention- Sneagator. It's a play on the words for "Sneaker" and "Alligator" in english. Snigator's another possibility.

While this isn’t really for Meat, all the Ultimate Muscle conversation seems to be taking place here. So her it goes…
Last Saturday morning I set my alarm, dragged myself out of bed, and turned on Ultimate Muscle. After 30 minutes, I turned it off and crawled back into bed feeling rather disappointed. But my disappointment stemmed from my own expectations.

I tried to keep in mind that it’s a kids show, and that it is taken from Japan, but it didn’t do any good. The problem really stemmed from my childhood memories. I remember having to make up everything about M.U.S.C.L.E’s. Seeing a version of it, different from my own, was very unsatisfying.

I guess in my case, ignorance is bliss when it comes to the “true” story of M.U.S.C.L.E’s.

The voices kinda grow on ya. I think it takes some getting used to because they had no voices and most of us had our own ideas of what some of the charcters might sound like.

I think that the voices fit pretty well now.

Pumpinator's real name is MAXman.

Hey Mike, you have any clue that in future episodes Meat is going to have to be very emotional over the death of a certain character. The fact that Meat sounds like a 60 year old man could make these scenes pretty awful.... You might wanna start practicing soon.

Also, you should go to my site, toriyamaworld.com and read the Kin manga. Book 10 is where some sad stuff happens to poor lil Meat. Though... actually, this might mess up your VAing, considering you'll see that the voice 4Kids gave him is WAAAAAAAY off, but oh well.

Dik Dik.... How freak'in hard is it to keep it as Gazellman?

Dik Dik is much funnier than Gazelle, for obvious reasons. Ask any child.

This is pretty much why TV dubbing in this country stinks. Why do these companies think that if something is "funnier" it is "better"? Imagine going to a restaurant and ordering a steak only to be served a piece of wood. Is the waiter gonna say "It's funnier, ask any child" and get away with it? Since when is a character's name suppose to be a joke? If that's the goal, why leave any names? Isn't Mantaro funnier than Kid Muscle? So why change it? And, I highly doubt anyone thinks that Dik Dik Van Dik is funny or clever, everyone just thinks it's stupid.

AK, it makes plenty of sense when you remember that the intent of bringing Kinnikuman over to the States is for it to be a KID'S cartoon.
Personally I think they should have left the series as true to form as possible, but the reality is that it is geared toward young kids, not us adults.
For a young "american" kid, Dik Dik van Dik has more giggle factor than Gazelleman.
If there were a large group of us older fans, such as Transformers or even Masters of the Universe, I think it would have been kept closer to the original storyling. But since the demographics they are pushing the FoxBox to are young kids, then it makes sense that they would ma ke quite a few changes to make it entertaining to the juvenile mind (damn, is that why I'm hooked?).
What a Japanese kid and an American kid find funny, can sometimes be VERY different because of the culture differences. Ultimate Muscle is geared towards american kids. Not adults who have a great enthusiasm for the original Kinnikuman line.
Realizing that, I can enjoy the new cartoon as well as the original Japanese cartoon.

I think Shakespeare said it best:

"What's in a name?

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

You guys seem to assume that the Japanese version is aimed at adults or something..... The anime is aimed at 7 year old in Japan. I bet the average age of the Japanese viewer is lower than the American version.

And anyway, what kind of moronity is this? Since when does the character's name indicate which demographic a show is aimed towards... You think kids will read the Illiad if they changed the names to Dik Dik? Or that kids wouldn't watch Ultimate Muscle if they gave the characters other names? The name change makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE! Do you guys even think about these things? No kid knows what a Dik Dik is and no kid knows who dork van Dyke is, thus any minute amount of cleverness is lost on them. At least kids know what a Gazelle is. Why not just name everyone Tittykaka?

Also, your Shakespear quote is correct, it's just too bad you don't understand it. If a rose is sweet by any name, then why change it? That's the whole point.

The name change makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE!

The name changes for all of them make perfect sense to me. They renamed the characters because most of the original names make little sense to American audiences. For example, "Mantaro" makes no sense... but "Kid Muscle" uses American words so it's easier to understand. "Maxman" has nothing to do with the powers of that character and was likely named that because the Japanese author had very little knowledge of English. "Pumpinator" makes much more sense because of pump sneakers. "Gazelleman" is feminine sounding and somewhat boring, so that's probably why they changed it to "Dik Dik Van Dik".

But you guys quoting Shakespeare really put it in perspective for me. It's JUST A CARTOON. It's not like it matters if they change things, and it's not like it's some kind of significantly great work of literature like Shakespeare (no offense, Mike :p ). You're just supposed to have fun with it!

your Shakespear quote is correct, it's just too bad you don't understand it. If a rose is sweet by any name, then why change it? That's the whole point.

No....

Some College Student writes:

"'What’s in a name?' Juliet cries, perched on her balcony. 'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.' Her crisis lies in the disjunction between Romeo’s name (Montague) with all its baggage and the thing itself, Romeo/lover, whose characteristics bear little resemblance to those attached to the name Montague. 'What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot/ Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part/ Belonging to a man.' Romeo, by any other name, would still 'retain that dear perfection which he owes/ Without that title', for ‘tis his name that is Juliet’s enemy."

So, replace "Montague" with "Gazelleman" and you'll see that a Gazelleman by any other name would be, and is, the same guy.

But we digress.

I think Dik Dik van Dik is a funnier name, especially after all the Dik Dik jokes I got to do. Besides, when movies are translated from English for foreign markets, titles, character names and lines of dialogue routinely get changed for a variety of reasons.

I hope I'm not! I'm just saying that Ultimate Muscle is great for what it is... cartoon fun! Watching it isn't going to change your life, it's not going to revolutionize the methods of storytelling... it's just a fun way to spend your Saturday mornings over a bowl of Apple Jacks. Which is exactly what it was designed to do.

That's why I really don't care that 4Kids changed the names, or if they change anything else for that matter. I just have fun watching it, enjoying it for what it is. I don't think the changes are all that drastic anyway... it's not like in Empire Strikes Back when they added Luke's scream when he was falling. Now THAT was sacrilege! :p

Well, for the guys over at 4Kids, I LOVE the show!
I don't own a TV, but I religiously go to my Grandmother's down the street, every Saturday morning at 8:30 AM to watch the 2 episodes!
Yeah, I wish the story would have stayed as true to the original as possible, but the show still ROCKS!
So until Stan Lee poses for Playboy, make mine M.U.S.C.L.E.!
