I'm new here so I'm very sorry if I'm doing something wrong, but I've been trying to figure out what MUSCLE figures are made of. I'm trying to get into another line mostly made of PVC, but since PVC leaks plasticizer I was worried about the toys drying out and cracking. Since I know MUSCLE is sort of soft plastic, I was wondering if this might be a case of a 30+ year old toy holding up despite being a similar material, which would make me feel a lot better about this.

Thanks!

Edit: I just realized i'm in the wrong forum, sorry! Can't figure out how to delete topics

The only times I have seen a M.U.S.C.L.E. degrade were due to extreme conditions, e.g. prolonged exposure to sunlight, open flame, being run over by a lawnmower, chewed up and swallowed by a dog, etc.

Outside of those and similar instances my M.U.S.C.L.E. collection has held up very well. No cracking, melting, or anything like that. The material is quite durable.

Yeah, they seem borderline indestructible. What I'm trying to figure out mainly is the actual name of the material if anyone's ever chemically tested it. I'm mainly curious because I know PVC can degrade but these sound exactly like PVC other than that.

Thanks though!

If you actually hold one in your hand it does not feel like a PVC material. Definitely more like rubber. You know, like Little Rubber Guys.

That's interesting, thanks. I'll admit I've seen em in person but never picked one up. I hadn't thought they were rubber after I'd read how much rigid they were than Kinnikuman figures, but that does make sense. I've gotta admit in all this I've started to want to pick a couple up!

It might be worth reaching out to the guy that does Alien Robot Monster. His pieces are remarkably similar in composition and color to M.U.S.C.L.E. figures. It may not be exactly the same chemically, but it's pretty damn close and it's something he does himself on a small scale.

Thank you

Ay, I love stuff like that. Thanks! I buy a lot of Glyos and that was actually the only reason I learned about MUSCLE to begin with, since it was well before my time.

hey ...im brand new here , and happend across this post ....the EXACT reason i accidently found this message board in the first place was in my quest to find out the material that the m.u.s.c.l.e. figures are made out of ….I create, mould, cast, etc my own little creation and I want to expand out to make some retro like muscle figures as well but also to make them as authentic as possible ….. so PLEASE  if and when anyone figures out the answer for what they are made from exactly …. I would highly appreciate the secret to be shared lol.... ill even hook you up with my proto types for free as a thank you ….

There is no secret to factory figures.  Factory injection pvc is very different than a Poly rubber mix. PVC figures start with Polyvinyl chloride beads that at melted down and injected into a steel mold (done in factory not at home).

Homebrew rubber casting is a Polyurethane 2-part mix and is very different in consistency to PVC. You can get many different durometers from very flexible to very firm, but the way they move and feel is different than PVC.

You can get a figures close to muscle using a 90-95 durometer, but it will bend weird and not feel like a real muscle.

One of the rubbers A.R.M. uses is Simpact 85a from smooth-on, but there are many types of casting rubbers out there. Just gotta look around on google.
