Someone needs to start a petition for this series to be licensed in America. I would be fine if the series had English volumes but they only have that for Kinnikuman nisei (ultimate muscle). There is only like 2 volumes translated for Kinnikuman nisei tag this needs to be translated or produced by viz.

It's just not marketable to a US audience.  The audience most likely to enjoy it (kids) is not likely to be allowed to watch something with such insane racial stereotypes (Ramenman) and nazi heroes.  It's a self-defeating market.

I had heard some rumors a long time ago that DiscoTek was trying to license the anime, but I could never find anything to corroborate that and when I contacted DiscoTek about it I was ignored

Ridureyu is correct - Kinnikuman is simply too obscure. There aren't enough Western fans that would pay money  to own the show. I know myself and many members of this forum likely would - but even the Kinnikuman section on this forum is incredibly small and doesn't see much activity. Which tells you everything you need to know considering this is probably the largest concentration of non-Japanese Kinnikuman fans besides that Facebook page that popped up months back.

I wish with all my heart there was some way I could own all of the volumes and/or episodes of the original Kinnikuman run, but it's just so unlikely to ever happen through official channels.

How come nobody has translated Kinnikuman nisei tag online?
Do you think it will eventually be translated?

The whole series?

I've found translations of 5 volumes

So if the series is more than 5 volumes, no. if the series if 5 volumes long, then yes

A tumblr user known as zeekay translated the tag arc, at least a bit of it from what I remember.

That being said, yea, unless wrestling gets bigger and/or the US becomes a lot more lax towards racial stereotypes, Kinnikuman won't do well in the U.S. I'd say we should be thankful Kinnikuman is/was so successful in Japan, the story gets so enigmatic and nonsensical that I couldn't see it succeeding at all if it were released today. I'm still trying to figure out where the hell the idea of a wrestler's life and existence being personified as a notebook page and them dying if their page burns up came from. And don't even get me started on the Tag Team arc's weird "let's separate the heroes by making dolls of them hate eachother thereby making the actual heroes hate eachother" subplot. Lots and lots of just downright weird ideas.

Yeah the original run of Kinnikuman is so ridiculously effing weird, even for a manga

So little makes sense, so many deus ex machina moments, so many continuity errors/plot holes/plot contrivances

It's just so entertaining that it's enjoyable despite being so nonsensical

I think it helps that the original run is aimed at kids, who aren't the toughest audience when it comes to stories that are out there

I personally feel like part of the draw is the spectacle - what the original run and anime lack in storytelling and character development, they more than make up for with character design and concepts. This may just be the fanboy in my, but after playing USFIV, Skullgirls, all 4 different Smash games, every iteration of DBZ fighting games, and even MK9, by far my favorite PS2 games are Galactic Wrestling/Kinnikuman Generations and Muscle Grand Prix 2. The designs are all so unique, especially for a wrestling manga, and as niche as wrestling is and has been as a sport, Kinnikuman really tapped into the well when it came to really cool and destructive moves, the Kinniku Buster on its own is iconic enough to be referenced almost as much as the Kamehameha, and Samoa Joe, one of the most popular professional wrestlers in the past 15 years, has had a variation of the Kinniku Buster (even called the Muscle Buster) as one of his signature moves since he started.

It's funny, because I'd say the exact opposite about Kinnikuman Nisei - aside from Mantaro and Kevin Mask, the characters are all garbage and the concepts for stories and characters are bland as hell, but the story is so much more better for it, just simple wrestling tournaments and an nWo parody.

Kinnikuman is one of those series where, much like some people say about Naruto, the plot is much better experienced through its video games than its actual manga/anime. If a new person really wanted to read the orignial manga I'd only say read the first two tournament arcs and the Tag Tourney arc, even though my favorite characters come from the Five Fated Princes arc.

Also some of the names that Yudetamago has come up with are so effing cool, especially the Five Fated Princes and the Stray Devil combo, but I digress.

I dunno, if the story was given another shot, maybe cleaning up the crazy subplots about this Arc's Newest MacGuffin and the crazy shit like Warsman literally escaping from Hell after dying for some reason, I could see it being really successful now. NJPW is starting to get really big in Japan and WWE is reaching a good balance between talent and stories that pulls almost every audience in. But, as it is, I don't think Kinnikuman would have a shadow of a chance at success in the US, and I feel like (this next part is pure assumption and speculation) the most recent new chapters agree with me, since both Nisei and the new arc pretty much flopped. I'd love to watch just the Tag arc without the stupid best friends storyline, and I want nothing more than a Five Fated princes arc that isn't convoluted as all hell. In the end, I'm just thankful Super Phoenix and the other Princes are playable in Muscle Grand Prix II.

TL;DR Kinnikuman's story and plotlines suck but the character designs and spectacle rock. Conversely, Nisei's characters suck except for Mantaro and Kevin, but its storytelling is much better. If the story was reworked to cut out all the fluff, I could see it being more successful today, but otherwise it'd just fall flat like the past attempts have. Also Stray Devil Combo is a badass name.

I agree with you for the most part, but I disagree with you on the nisei part. There are plenty of great characters in the series other than Mantaro and Kevin. Some examples of these chracters are jade, checkmate, scarface, bone cold, Barrierfreeman, terry the kid, and hanzo. Most of these character have their epic moments in the series, are given back stories, and character development. I think that these characters got more development than characters like wolfman, Atlantis, black hole, zebra, mountain, etc.

Agreed! the series basically lives and dies by the character designs and just the overall off the wall insanity of it. Like I said, it's so entertaining that you don't care that it makes no sense

And yeah, Takashi Shimada just has a knack for designing characters. Or rather, taking fan character designs and refining them into something awesome in many cases. The character designs of Kinnikuman are so freaking amazing, it's not surprising that companies are still making figures of those same 2 dozen or so characters from the original run, even close to 40 years later.

Have you been reading the Kinnikuman Revival series that started in 2010 at all?

Cause it's basically what you're describing in your last sentence - A relatively serious, well written (for a manga) story that is still over the top as you'd expect anything carrying the Kinnikuman name to be, but has much more of an internal logic governing it rather than the random insanity of the original run

I wish the Revival would be licensed in the West - It would be much more palatable to a Western audience than the original run. Especially since, as you said, pro wrestling is really starting to get "cool" again.

I love Galactic Wrestling as well - I actually became a fan of Kinnikuman due to that game. I had never read or watched the series at all, but as a lifelong wrestling fan I just had to try that game when I saw it in GameStop one day. The rest is history lol

I actually haven't been able to read the revival since it's not all on kissmanga, which is where I found translations of the original run, but from what little bit I have read, it doesn't look too bad, if I'm right in assuming it's the arc with Nemesis, though I will admit I hate the design of Dalmationman or whoever.

Also, after giving it more thought, I will say that Nisei's character aren't that bad. It's kind of silly for me to say that anyway, since Jade/Jeager is my favorite Nisei character and I didn't even mention him, I just feel the designs aren't up to par with the original's character designs. Neptuneman, Big Budo/Neptune King, Akuma Shogun/Goldman, Super Phoenix and Prisman all have distinct yet simplistic designs that are really easy to recognize, and even the other Kinnkumans and their lackeys like Motorcycleman or whatever (it's been a while since I last read the Fated Princes arc) and Mixer Tatei stand out. Also the personalities are a bit weaker, especially Mantaro's teammates before the end of the dMp arc. Gazelleman/Dik Dik is pretty much just a jobber or cannon fodder, and Seiuchin, who does get better later, starts out as basically just another hero character. I especially hate Terry the Kid, who's literally just a reprint of his father but with a mullet, it always felt really weak to me.

Oh yeah and keep in mind when I talk about Nisei I've only watched the anime of it and haven't been able to read the time travel tag arc that came out after, though I do know of the new protagonist introduced to team with Mantaro. I hear it's pretty good.

I agree with you that the designs aren't all that great. Terry the kid is almost the same as his father (except in the very beginning) but I still think he is a good character, but I'm a bit of a nisei fanboy, therefore I might be slightly biased. The nisei manga is much better than the anime. I recommend reading the manga. The nisei tag manga is great from what I've read. The new character that I think your talking about is chaos. He is a great character with an amazing backstory.

Probably does, but if it's a bootleg it's a total crapshoot as to how good it is. Showing off the front cover would be infinitely more helpful than a blurry closeup of the back.
