I'v been selling some TCG cards on Ebay lately. All worth $15 to $60 each. The thing is that the game is dead here in the states. But the game is still alive in places like Singapore, Japan, Poland, and Finland. Among other places in Asia and Europe. But I don't want to send over seas because the tracking is so expensive. For example, tracking to Japan was quoted around $50. How can I ask anyone to potentially pay more for shipping than what the card is worth?  Whenever I make a listing, I get several messages from people in Asia and Europe who want to buy. But tracking is holding me back from selling to anyone outside of the states.

I'd really like to open my buyer base by selling world wide. Are there ways of insuring that I won't get scammed by somebody who could just say "I didn't receive the package"? Is there something I could put into the description of a sale that would make the buyer liable if the package "doesn't reach them"?

Luckily I haven't been scammed on the first couple of listings where I had to honor the sale to other counties.(I didn't know about closing sales off to other countries in the advanced settings)

I'm looking for somebody who has experience with selling world wide. How do you handle expensive tracking? Would it just be a good idea and stick with only selling in my country?

ebay has that international program.... you ship to a place in the states(mine goes to ky), and that place ships to the overseas.....as long as your package got to THAT(in the states)place,  you're safe. somebody here will chime in with more details, but i've sold lego all over the world on ebay and went through that program and i never had any issues. i hope that helps you a little buddy.

What does it cost you to use that shipping program?

I have been selling on eBay for many many years, and from my perspective there is no good solution to your problem today.  USPS rates to ship overseas are expensive and I have not found any other options, regardless of weight or method chosen.  Adding additional services further inflates the price.  I am in the same boat as you that I get significant foreign interest on my auctions, but lose most of these sales to the mininimum shipping cost of $12-14.

Now I will say that $50 seems far beyond reasonable, and I have shipped a substantial number of things overseas in the past 2-3 years with the cost never going above around $25 max.  USPS International First Class comes with a tracking number (it does not always work once it leaves the US, but that is up to the foreign postal service and not the USPS), and for TCG cards with minor weights this should cost along the lines of the $12-14 I quoted above.

Jason is referring to the eBay global service for shipping, which I believe is guaranteed, should cost far below $50 for something that only weighs a few ounces.  Its kind of a hassle (in my eyes) and costs more than normal first class (since its double handled, reshipped, and includes eBay additional costs).  However, it takes the risk out of shipping and again, should never cost close to $50.  But I do not think this will get your costs anyplace close to making it desirable for most foreign buyers.

In the end, for low cost items, unless it is an item made in the US and entirely unavailable overseas, it is usually not economical for foreign buyers to pay the pretty high US shipping rates.

Yeah the only number I was able to give the buyer was for Customs. It eased their minds seeing that I did indeed send it out.

I don't think $12 is unreasonable for shipping across seas. Neither does the buyers it seems. The guy from Japan wanted to give an extra $20 to get a $50 card. And another guy from Poland didn't have anything to say about what I charged for shipping.(he was more worried about the cards getting to him in one piece)

I want to be able to sell world wide. But going through an additional shipping program and have to pay for that as well might not be worth it. I'm kind of thinking of trying my luck. Open the floodgates and see if anyone burns me. I'd like to think nobody would, but come on now.

Thank you for the suggestions and information. Anything anyone else wants to add is very well welcome.

Just to clarify... Ebay's Global Shipping program, doesn't cost YOU anything extra.  It costs more for the buyer.

For example, let's say you have and auction up and you charge domestic S&H of $5.  Not someone in Italy buys your item.  EBay will charge the CUSTOMER the difference in additional S&H costs.  Not you.  That's between the buyer and Ebay... in fact, you won't even see what they charge them.

And it does protect you to some extent.  I've had two cases where the global S&H program protected me.

HOWEVER - here's the rub:  Sometimes Ebay charges your customer SO much more - that the additional fees are a detourant to your customer's purchase, so on occasion, I have had customers cancel their order because Ebay was charging them too much.

I might be worth a try dude.  You don't do much to sign up.  Pretty much just hit a button in your Ebay back office and it's on.

Whatever you end up doing, good luck!

Am also interested in others solutions, have always kept listings with the US due to the shipping costs but would like to cast a wider net in the future.

Outside of Ebay, have sent a few things out with USPS that went Priority Express international that were well under $50 - think they were around $20. Some did have to pay additional customs fees to pick up the shipment while others did not. The only restrictions for those methods is weight, but other than that they're not bad for smaller shipments.

I only ship priority or registered when shipping overseas, unless it's someone I know really well. I have been ripped off on really expensive items but have always had the Seller Protection so it's never really affected me that much. I say just leave it up to the buyer it's up to them if they want that card plus that shipping price they don't need to buy it from you.
