One of the hobbies my wife and I enjoy is playing board games.  Usually Euros which means the bits consist primarily of meeples, cubes, and sometimes discs.  Now don't get me wrong...  I love my beaver chow!  But over the last couple of years there has been an upswing in games having really nice looking keshi-inspired figures and I've found myself tempted to pick up some of these games just because the pieces look sooooo neat.

(...all pix are not mine and ganked from BoardGameGeek.com btw...)

I picked up a Krosmaster: Arena starter set on sale at Barnes & Noble one day.  The miniatures are painted and look great (if you don't mind a very chibi-fied style...) and there's no blind boxes on 'em so you can pick up all kinds of booster packs (even though there are a lot of repaints...)

I haven't picked up Super Dungeon Explore but holy crap does this game come with a ton of stuff!  Once again the figures look fantastic (which makes sense seeing as how the game was created by Soda Pop Miniatures!)

Wasn't weapons and warriors a re-puposing of the old Crossbows and Catapults games?

When I was a kid I had Immortals Of Change which was basically a sci-fi themed version of Crossbows and Catapults.  Instead of little vikings it came with spacemen who were hinged at the waist so they could ride in the spaceships you'd build and then shoot discs at.

And yeah, beaver chow = wooden bits  :D

I've been tempted to buy the board game Cthulhu Wars for the awesome minifigs included..
Many Lovecraftian Creatures are represented..

The $200 pricetag makes it difficult to make the leap... Could be found cheaper on ebay though.

I ended up backing this:

The minis are essentially Hero Quest clones. I've since bought the actual Hero Quest so once I have this in hand I may end up offering it up on here or ebay.

That looks pretty rad.  Has anybody ever done a proper reissue of Hero Quest...?

I remember hearing about Cthulhu Wars when it first came out and some of those miniatures are huge!  Back in 2012 I scratched my Lovecraft-related game itch with Mansions of Madness from Fantasy Flight Games (a publisher well-know for giving us large boxes filled with little plastic dudes...)  It comes packed with all kinds of cultists, cthonians, shoggoths, and even a couple of the hounds of Tindalos.

I guess between digital sculpting and 3d printing it's gotten easier (and cheaper) to produce some amazing pieces like these guys from Ninja All-Stars...

I think someone either did & it was hated or it was hated so much it never fully took off. There's also Advanced Hero Quest. I recently bought the original & the 2 US expansions on the cheap since it was mis-listed?

Mansions of Madness looks awesome! I'm a huge Lovecraft & R.E. Howard fan, & hope to someday see a Hyboria meets Dreamlands minis game. Conan vs. Cthulhu!

I usually keep an eye on the games and see if I can track down any loose figures online. Do agree that there have been really neat figures in a lot of newer games, wish half of em were turned into stand-alone kits or done to a somewhat larger scale.

Yep. That is why I originally backed Zombicide. The big bonus was that it is a super fun game for my son and I to play. :)

The reboot of Heroquest was called Heroscape, and it primarily used the mechanics of Heroquest to implement a hex-based tabletop war game instead of a psudo-RPG.  The Magic: The Gathering board game is a reskin of the basic Heroscape rules, as well, with adjustments.  Personally, I think all of those are worth picking up if you can get them affordably.

Our glorious Milky Way is a tiny, infinitesimal speck of sand in this vast, incomprehensible universe. And somewhere in that Milky Way is our own solar system, less than one billionth of that speck of sand that is the Milky Way. And then there is our planet Earth, one hundred trillionth of that one billionth of that one speck of sand. And on this planet Earth there is DEV-0, an insignificant blemish with a lifespan too short to measure when placed in infinite time.

And you are here, with them, as so many specks of sand.

I've never been able to get in a game, but I did find the Magic: The Gathering base game at a Five Below for, you guessed it, five bucks. That was a hell of a steal, and should I ever find enough interest to grab more, the expansions that go with the game are rather affordable on Amazon and elsewhere. Not the highest quality minis but pretty serviceable for that low a price.
