I recently got this gashapon set (if you can call it one?) off of eBay, mainly out of pure curiosity! I've never seen any info or documentation of this gashapon series, as most Gen 1 era (late 90's to early 00's) gashapon series were mainly keychains, mini plushies, and Full Color Stadium figures. Here's a look at the can I got + some close ups of the paper list insert, and the mini keshi themselves!

I unfortunately can't read the text, but I can ASSUME it says that there's five cans to collect OR five figures in each can, and there's 19 figures to collect! I have no idea if each can has a single GID figure guaranteed, I can only assume it could be randomly inserted.

There's the back of the paper, I think it might have some info on the set? I'm unsure if scanning it with google translate will work, at least it shows a neat illustration on the can and a GID Charmander!

The GID figure I got, Meowth! The ONLY figure to be 100% mint and intact, the rest are all broken (and crusty feeling?)

Attached File  IMG_8277.jpg   186.59K   0 downloads

The other two Meowths I got, both in yellow (which is perfect!) but unfortunately both have some degree of broken whiskers, snapped off tail ends, and one has a broken foot

Attached File  IMG_8275.jpg   171.7K   0 downloads

Probably my second fav figure in the lot a red Electabuzz! He has a snapped off tail end and a broken toe..... Still looks sick as hell though, I always loved the Elekid line so I'm very happy to have such a small yet neatly detailed figure!!!

Attached File  IMG_8274.jpg   155.26K   0 downloads

The last and sadly the most beat up one, a green Wigglytuff  Looks like they not only have both of their ears and a foot snapped off, but also a punctured lung! At least the face is still very cute, and I'm overall very impressed how all of them look on-model for the time!

My main questions are the following though:

1. Can anyone confirm what are all 19(?) designs in the set? And how many colors were made, I can see that black/blue is on the paper list picture, along with red, yellow, light green, and GID pink.

2. How many can designs there truly are? I don't think it's five, looks like they're just the three final evolutions of the Kanto starter trio.

3. What material are these made out of? The broken solid color figures have a odd 'crusty' feeling to them and they feel hard and 'full'. The GID figure feels MUCH lighter in comparison, and even hollow-ish? I can only guess the solid color figures are very old rubber and the GID figures are a type of colored clear resin (please correct me if you know better!)

4. Along with this series, is there other mini keshi sets for Pokemon? I've seen some larger keshi since gen 1 all the way to gen 6 (XY era, they were sold in pokeballs with mons like Pikachu, Pancham, Hoopa, etc. I'm unsure if they made more keshi after gen 7, Alola era) but this is the only time I've seen mini keshi for the franchise!

Any help or further info on these lil can guys will be EXTREMELY appreciated, you can also DM me on insta for more quick responses from me! (username is the same as on here, Rejectclone!)

The sculpts are nice. Pity they appear to be so brittle.

i'm guessing the opaque ones are an eraser rubber that dried out?

There's quite a few minifigure lines out there for Pokémon, even in the Gen 1 days. I'm not familiar with this line at all but do know of several other keshi lines and the annoyingly rare and poorly documented metal minifigures.

The term "gashapon" is reserved specifically for toys sold in capsules or otherwise blindpacked in vending machines. You also frequently see "shokugan", candy toys, simple toys packed with candy or gum. Almost looks like that might have been what these were, but they might just have been sold as novelties. The low price would make more sense if they originally came with some crummy candy or whatever, though.

Far as I can tell, that insert is saying one package comes with five figures inside. Really terrible image (theirs I mean, not yours) of that group shot, which only helps with identifying some of the possible figures. Hope you manage to get some more info on this line, maybe see if the brittle dried-out figures are common or an unfortunate anomaly. At least those GITD figures look neat!

This definitely wasn't a shokugan figure, it came with it's original gashapon capsule which I just didn't photograph!  :( The capsule says Yujin on top, and 'made in Taiwan' at the bottom.

I also tried my best to identify the figures in the group shot + the ones I got that aren't in the group shot!:

1. Blastoise

2. Charizard

3. Venusaur

4. Mewtwo

5. Pikachu

6. Meowth

7. Electabuzz

8. Wigglytuff

9. Clefairy

10. Vaporeon

11. Jolteon

12. Poliwhirl/Poliwrath? (Hard to tell, they're quite similar)

13. Squirtle? (It's bipedal and placed next to the Blastoise fig, and I can kinda see it's curled tail and three-fingered hands)

14-19: Unknown/Unsure if 19 means if that's the total amount of figure designs in the set

That's all I can see on the group shot, there is 3 others I cannot identify at all, one LOOKS like it could be Scyther but it's cut off in the shot by one of the text bubbles.

Also, I took a pic of the GID Meowth glowing in the dark, but I don't know how to add pictures when replying on a post, sorry!  :( It's a nice bright and orangey-peach color, I totally didn't expect that!

the fact that they are dried out means they probably sat  in an area with a lot of heat, storage or a store window. I have kinkeshi that has broken up like that, an kinkeshi are pretty resilient.

I found pictures from an old auction. shows there are two different types, one with glow and one with either chromed plastic or metal figures.

and after uploading these pics, i realized i have some of these. They are Tiny huh? like 1/2"-3/4"

I had NO IDEA there were metallic figures in this set!!! :o Thank you so much for sharing those pics, I've tried my best looking for other pics of this series to no avail! :'( So with this new info, I can update the known figures in this series:

1. Blastoise

2. Charizard

3. Venusaur

4. Mewtwo

5. Pikachu

6. Meowth

7. Electabuzz

8. Wigglytuff

9. Clefairy

10. Vaporeon

11. Jolteon

12. Poliwhirl/Poliwrath? (Hard to tell, they're quite similar and the new GID picture isn't helping me differentiate them well)

13. Squirtle? (It's bipedal and placed next to the Blastoise fig in the paper insert group shot, and I can kinda see it's curled tail and three-fingered hands)

- NEW ADDITIONS -

14: Charmander

15: Hitmonlee

16: Flareon (considering that the other two OG eeveelutions were confirmed before, I assumed Flareon was also in, but I didn't want to say it since I was still a bit worried that it truly wasn't :') )

17: Dragonite

18: Articuno

19: Unknown/Unsure if 19 means if that's the total amount of figure designs in the set (considering that Charmander is now confirmed to be in the set, and I'm KINDA POSITIVE Squirtle is too, it's safe to say Bulbasaur could be the plausible last figure)

It's also very intriguing to me that my GID Meowth is colored pink while those in that lot pic are all colored in the standard 'white', perhaps mine got somehow stained or was a miscolored pour??? Unless if later on any of us can find even more buried pics of the GID figures in other colors.

And yeah, these lil guys are practically microscopic! The average height for these seem to be 2 cm/less than a inch! Also I'm glad you could solve the confusion over why these seem to be so brittle, hopefully I can find some replacements for the broken ones in the future!

Japanese keshi don’t shy away from doing glow figures in colors other than the boring vanilla GITD green, so that Meowth is no accident.

Seen metallic figures like those before, most likely chromed (the actual series of metal Pokémon keshi are quite different and covered the first 150 or 151).

The combination of those chromed figures and the Meowth in a different glow color make me wonder if there were multiple series, with your particular capsule being a repack that mixed together sets. It might also explain how you ended up with so many duplicates.

In the above picture, the green text to the left of the Tomy logo says that there are 19 types. The black text in the white bubble below the Tomy logo says that there are 5 figures in each can.

The blue text with the white outlines below that there are blue, red, yellow and glow figures.

The red text in the yellow block on the bottom left says something to the effect of "Pokemon Tins"

Attached File  IMG_8272.jpg   192.26K   4 downloads

In this picture, the text at the top translates to "Collect lots of Pokemon!".

The text starting with the star below that is just instructions on how to open the can.

Below that it instructs the user to hold the glow figures up to a fluorescent light and then take it to a dark place to see it glow.

In the right bottom corner, the text between two black dots warns you not to eat the figures.

Thank you

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for translating all of the text!!!!  I'm glad to see that my assumption about there being 19 designs was correct! Hopefully the list can now help some other peeps collect this set, it's now just a matter of figuring out if there was some sort of reprint/sequel set to this series, since we now have those chrome figures to consider + what were the rest of the produced colors in this series?...... (Perhaps my can was part of a reprint set like what BaltanII suggested?)

these look exactly like the card backed pokemon erasers I used to buy in the 90s. never got the whole line, but the poses for the ones I have are identical.

heres a picture of them in package:

I've seen some of those larger figures loose for sale from time to time, I can only assume they just used the same pose/mold for this series and just shrunk it down to make mini keshi? Since I also feel like these look incredibly similar to the classic Gen 1 Tomy figures!
