Back in the day... meaning the early to middle 1980's, there was a flurry of inexpensive fantasy toys that were produced.
One of the "coolest" was ARCO's "Dragons'n Monsters".
I remember buying these toys at my local pharmacy store with my mom when I was 8 years old.
I won't tell you what year that was to avoid being pointed and yelled at. "OLD"!

This is the story of a toy line that has been erased from the history books and the lame toy collector (that's me) that obsessed over them and is researching what happened.

First off, allow me to introduce you to the green lizard man.
This guy was posted on ebay recently as a misc "monster"
I paid too much for it but don't have much of a collection right now.

Additionally I have had some help gathering what I have.

I would like to throw a call out to:

THEGODBEAST Posted Image
For sending me one of each tower.
&
deadfishlake Posted Image
For sending me a red dragon to go with my gold one.

Here's where I'm at.
  • Two Brown Towers
  • One Grey Castle
  • One Gold Dragon
  • One Red Dragon
  • One Green Lizard Man

Please post any pictures that you may have here and help me to build a crazy collection and database all about how weird and obscure this toy line is.
Cheers,
- Spooky

Looks awesome! At least you've got a good start to the collection. That red dragon looks badass, by the way :)

How about these? I didn't think ANYBODY would even remember these let alone care about them! :-)

I am only missing the Red Lizardman. DAMN!!!

Thanks so much for posting!

p.s.

Thanks to Brojo for finding this post for me so I could finally see an up-close of my Mysterious Missing Lizardman.

I will try to post some pics later. My guys are kinda rubbery.

I could have sworn when I was a little kid I got a bag of grey, black and dark red ARCO knights and monters in a baggie from TRU. Anyone remember those?

I do remember that. I had posted something along those lines in an earlier post. I am shocked anybody out there remembers these guys!!! I wish I could have bought that bag. It was probably a whopping two or three dollars back then! ;-) Probably even less, but I was only 7 or 8 at the time.

Could be "Warriors of the Galaxy" which was a toy line at the same time. Or the knock-off of Dimensions for Children's "Dragon Riders of Styxx".

I love this stuff.

I love this stuff, too! This is my favorite thread so far!!!

I just wish I still had that DFC Dragonriders set! It was great!!! I had posted some photos of what remained (pitifully almost nada) soon after I raided my Parents's garage.

I was just going through some completed listings, and look what I saw:
http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item3caac06262

Green dragon from Dragons n Monsters. Seems like searching these DFC toys might yield a few Dragons n Monsters figures from time to time. BTW, the DFC Naga figure looks awesome! The wizard too

Yeah I was bidding on that but someone wanted it WAY more than me.
$36 +shipping!!! OUCH
I have seen a completed DFC set sell for $50 in box.
V
But yes, I usually search for: "vintage plastic dragon" or "80's plastic/rubber figure"
I spend hours trying to find anything... it's depressing.
-Spooky

Here are the images from the original thread.
Additionally,
Here is something completely different:
There was a toy company names Toyco that had created a toy line just like DFC.
They were pretty cool.
The same as before. I only have one dragon figure and one knight.

Wow. Starting bid is $50??? Damn. I really want those ARCO toys, but not enough to justify 50 smackers. Maybe, I do mean MAYBE, if it was a "Buy It Now" price.

Thanks for the post! I am still gladdened to see more ARCO mini-monsters posted!

If you're referring to the eBay auction which I posted a link to yesterday, then you're mistaken. The starting bid is $4.99 USD, not $49.99.

I hope you'll consider letting "Grimbrothersspooky" try to win those DNM figures for his collection, especially since you already own every DNM figure except the red lizardman - which isn't even in that lot. Just a suggestion.

Hey Guys, WOW!
You ROCK!!!

Additionally why does everyone keep referring to a red lizard man?
Do you have other colored lizard man's?

Additionally, it looks as though someone else is willing to actively bid on it (more than $20) which means I don't want to fight.
These guys are not worth $10 each!!!
I will pick my auctions.

Well now, just cause you already own them doesn't mean you can't still want to get more :(

Though in all honesty I wish this was a sentiment more collectors would possess. It's not a matter of calling 'dibs' on something, it's a matter of being kind to another collector who's need or desire is a little stronger. Obviously though very few collectors (or people in general) have enough empathy to say 'your need/desire is stronger than mine' and act accordingly. Many, many more people would instead immediately take the stance of 'so what, I want it too', never even thinking that maybe the person wants it to get back a fond childhood memory or something.

But I digress, as I think very few people will agree with me (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if someone quotes my above statement to disagree with it). I agree with Brojo but I thought I'd point out that what he's asking for is more uncommon than it seems.

I am going to bid and take EVERYTHING! The ARCO World is mine!!! Mwahahaha!!!

Just kidding. The Grim One has already pm'ed me. I said he could go for it as all I really want/need was the INfamous ("so famous, that it's In the famous..") Red Lizardman. And I am the guilty party who keeps bringing it up (red lizard man! red lizard man!!) because that is the only one of 8 known ARCO Dragons'n Monsters figures I never owned. When I got these as a youngster, factory screw-up short-changed me... that's right... a red lizardman.

GrimsBrotherSpooky is really a cool guy and I hope he wins the auction.

RED LIZARDMAN!!!

Yeppers! My bad. It was late at night when I checked this out and would have sworn it said $49.99. I must be getting old and senile...

"Username": 1) Did those vampire figures come with that red tower? 2) If so, are they manufactured by ARCO?

That tower definitely looks exactly like a Dragons 'N Monsters tower, although I'm unsure whether DNM included a red version of that tower. If not, then the red tower must have been made from the same mold, but for a different toy-line.

Probably not ARCO as the base of the tower is stamped "1990 Toys n Things Made in China." Also, the inside 'floor' of the tower is stamped with "11".

All that is left of my "ARCO" baggy of warriors, monsters and such. Tip of the falchion was chewed off and the base was cut (guess I wanted him to fit on a horse):

I'm totally interested in two non-ARCO figures in that lot if that's the case. I didn't want to compete with the heavy bidding for those figures, especially when I saw who was auctioning them.

I did win the auction!
$26 is pretty steep but I decided to go that high and I guess knowone else had much confidence in that guy.
I know he got banned and have chased fraudulent ebay sellers before and always won.
If this guy screws me I will let you know but i won't lose any money.

If the other stuff interests anyone please PM me and state your interest.
I live in Canada so shipping is a bit higher than within the US but I am open to any inquiries.
