I must admit, I don't dislike eBay (unlike some on here - understandably) and I still use it often to buy and sell. However, I've noticed people using a couple of phrase more and more recently which really wind me up: "Payment to be made within 24 hours" or "Payment to be made immediately after auction ends" Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't eBay rules state that payment needs to be made within 4 days or an auction ending? Yes this is only a small, insignificant point, but why do some sellers think they can threaten reporting or negative feedback just because someone format may straightway. I know we all like to be paid as soon as possible, but if there is a rule that states payment within 5 days, why ask for it soon? Just niggles me every time I see it and puts me off bidding.

there is a rough period of time you, as the buyer, get to pay for the item. After that time (i have mine on an auto reminder) I send the buyer a notice telling them to pay, after 2-3 days, if no payment is recieved I file it as an unpaid, eBay credits back my listing fees and time goes on. I honestly don't think they can enforce fast payment

I understand your end, Burty, but as a seller, I also see the other side.   I try to be more than fair - I allow three days grace - but still people will try and take advantage.  Hell, I even state in my auctions that you are welcome to contact me beforehand and make arrangements, should you need an extension.   Winning an auction then letting things languish for days with no contact whatsoever is just very bad form, imho.

But yeah, the 24 hour rule is a bit much.   Whenever I see that I think of a douchebag landlord that shows up for the rent at 6 AM on the day it's due, heh.   Appears pushy and maybe desperate.

Still, though; I wouldn't go to a restaurant, enjoy a lavish meal with all the extras, then linger around the place for days and not expect the staff to get salty with me, would you?

You can open an unpaid item case after 2 days, and then the buyer gets another 4 days after that. I think 6 days is long enough for a buyer to click a button.

Seller can pull their list at any time, refuse sale to anyone, take your money for a while-refund it after "borrowing" it, etc etc.  The rules ebay states don't mean anything.  Doesn't matter what our opinions are about them.  Most you can do is not buy from them anymore or leave a neg....  That's it.  Sucks.

First, I am fascinated by the colloquialism "just niggles"... I've never head this before.  It is awesome.

What's equally funny about the folks that say within 24 hours... they can always set there auction up on a "BUT IT NOW" that requires immediate payment if they really want to. I'm not sure why they wouldn't just do that instead.  When you do that, if the buyer can't pay immediately it won't even let you buy it.

I'm not someone who  puts any conditions on when the buy can or should pay... but I am occasionally frustrated by sellers that don't pay in a timely fashion.  I try and schedule all my auctions to end at the same time, so that within the next 48 hours I can go to the post office.  I try and take everything at once.  When I have a seller that takes extra time to pay, then of course that throws my whole schedule off and sometimes requires multiple trips.  Then I get grumpy.

I usually ask for payment within 48 hours of the auction ending and try to have my listings end on a Friday or Saturday so I'm getting packages ready on Sunday to ship on Monday if the buyers pay quickly. I think ebay rates sellers on how quickly they ship and I try to ship the first business day possible after receiving payment. It's annoying to have payments come in a few days after the auction ends when it might not be convenient for me to ship.

I don't mind if it turns buyers off. I'd rather deal with people that pay quickly. All it takes to be a good buyer on ebay is pay right away and leave feedback for the seller.

I think most 'normal' eBay users want to pay or send payment as soon as possible - I just don't like being told when I have to pay by. As always, it's the small amount of absolute chumps that spoil it for the rest of us. To me, it's like driving along a 30mph road with people standing on each side of the street holding up 25mph signs. Futile and pretty annoying. You'd want to drive at 35 just to annoy them - or in the case of eBay win the auction and deliberately not pay for a couple of days.

When I sell stuff (I don't sell very often), I write "Please pay within 48 hours of auction ending.  I'll ship within 48 of payment (weekends and holidays permitting)."  I always thought this was a fair request/response.

It's the "same day payment" and "pay within 24 hours" that gripes me more so than the 48 hours requests. 2 days is plenty of time.

I'd never dictate that a buyer must pay within 24 hours, but when I see listings that say that it doesn't bother me enough to keep me from giving them my business. I aways pay immediately so it doesn't really matter to me. I'm sure it's just the sellers' reaction to having been jerked around by deadbeat buyers who win items and then never pay at all, wasting their time and ultimately forcing them to re-list.

I have a friend who uses ebay as a main source of income and he does the 24 hour thing as well. It's an empty threat really but i can understand why he does it. There are a big handful of major vintage sellers who specialize in the same thing he does. The problem is the world is full of scumbags so if he has something rare and sought after up for sale he does tons of research and puts tons of effort into his listings so these other bastards will steal as much stuff as they can from his auction to almost copy it minus the images and list one themselves while using shill accounts to buy his item(he uses buyitnow mostly)then string along the payment time hoping their own item sells before he can relist. It's happened to him literally hundreds of times. He tried adding the immediate payment option but it hurts his overall sales very significantly.

Weird. I always pay immediately, and didn't realize that this was such a thing.

Weird. I always pay immediately, and didn't realize that this was such a thing.

Same.  As a seller, everything is automated anyway.  I use only BIN option so no waiting around for auctions to end and people to pay.  You buy the BIN and you have to pay at that point or you do not get the item.  Period. It is all automated.  I occasionally have BIN or Best Offer.  If I accept a best offer it is treated like a silly auction and I them have to wait up to 48 hours for the person to pay.  If they do not pay in 2 days, ebay automatically opens a case.  Easy peasy.  2 days is fine.  Even in auctions, as mentioned above, "must pay immediately" is an empty threat.

But plastic soul did bring up something that seems like a more legitimate gripe.  Ebay encourages "stealing" other users listing structures and arrangements.  Just click that "have one to sell? Sell now" and ebay gives you all the previous sellers info including photos to use in your own listing.
