Showcase #11: 29th Anniversary 2008 DVD 418 Kinkeshi Reissue Set

This is what started it all for me!

By pure happenstance I was looking for a new anime to watch. I am a really big fan of Saint Seiya, Dragonball Z etc (older anime and not so much new stuff).

I have a weird fondness for watching anime in Japanese (with English subs if possible) and I bumped into Kinnikuman and remembered two things:

1-Watching Ultimate Muscle in my local Chicago affiliate (I am pretty sure it was channel 26 the U/WB). Being a huge Pro Wrestling fan and former wrestler it was a natural gravitation.

2-Watching Kinnikuman in Spanish when I visited relatives in Mexico as a child. So I thought: “Let’s give Kinnikuman a try!” I didn’t want to watch Ultimate Muscle but I wanted to watch the original source. I did my research and looked for DVDs online.

Before even knowing about LRG’s existence (wish I had before I bought the set) I naturally went the amazonjapan route. I found the entire series in Japanese but this particular listing I saw had figures (the reissue set). Which I would later find out where called Kinkeshi and that triggered another memory and that was MUSCLE!

I was born in 1985 so I missed the initial release but remembered my Dad buying me Muscles at a Woolworth in Chicago and Bootleg Ninja Mite 28 Packs at a Dollar General! So I just pulled the trigger and bought the DVD set with the figures (not knowing that it was part of a bigger set which included other cool stuff that unfortunately my set did not have).

For $300 bucks I thought it was a deal (in hindsight I probably could have gotten a better deal but I try not think about that Haha). I am a collector at heart (from comics, figures and movies) so once I started I jumped into the lake that is kinkeshi/kinnikuman!

As far as the reissue set: I think it’s obviously the cheapest route when it comes to having a full Japanese Kinkeshi set. What I love most about the reissue sets is what some dislike and that is that they are smaller in size. I find that practical for storage reasons!

Having them that size comes in handy when displaying them (for me its nail polish displays) and having mostly all of them fit in two shelves (standing them by themselves will not work without some kind of base). For display purposes it’s a great set and for some the only way to own and see the rare sculpts from Parts 20 to Parts 30. I like having them all crowded together and it reminds me of some of the pics I have seen online which show the entire collection in 1 picture from Japanese publications/ads.

For me Muscles go with Kinkeshi (color schemes/tone be damned! Not that picky). To me they are in the same family regardless of PVC and rubber (Of course not together! You don’t want your dudes melting!)

Eventually I want to display these better but for now two shelves will do! Now you can find the sets online without the extras or the DVD set etc for about $150 to $200 (with or without shipping). You might get lucky on yahoojapan and buy them for cheap in an auction no one is paying attention to for example. I

don’t get regret buying them as it lead me to collecting Kinnikuman/Muscle and it also makes me want to collect the original Kinkeshi even more.

At UofM, ProfessorTerry had a nice musing about the reissue set which can be found here: http://blog.uofmuscl...le-musings-101/

So if you bump into this set buy it! Be aware that sometimes when buying this set online (even if new) some figures end up missing from a set (due to negligence or just the seller not including it). So count those rascals!

I can imagine in a couple of years the full reissue set might become scarce. I know that the “CHINA” reissues don’t get the love the regular vintage kinkeshi do but I think had we not had that reissue set we would not be seeing the premium set volumes today (just a hunch/opinion).

So am all about supporting the product :)

The original Japanese vintage Kinkeshi from the 1980's or in general Japanese Keshigomu from that time when mixed with other colors in storage (even from the same line) due to a bunch of things (like no air or the plastic bags or capsules they are kept in) cause a chemical reaction that is called "melting" (or at least amongst the community).

Nothing happens to the Kinkeshi/Keshigomu that caused it and even the melting gunk can be removed (by hand with hot water and some light scrubbing) but just to be safe keep them together by color (Blues with Blues etc and in a ziploc bag for example)

.

But who know's what long term storage can cause or harm a figure; I have seen figures melt through capsule plastic but wood for example or present acrylic doesnt have a reaction when out in the open.

If you do display them together like myself, I have them inside a cabinet out in the open were they can breathe (that to me is the most important thing). The later lines and reissues dont have this problem so you can mix them together without the worry of melting; just not with the original vintage Kinkeshi/keshigomu.

I like to keep mine on display and hate having them in storage.

I have kinkeshi still in capsules that have melted the capsules pretty bad, it's just a chemical reaction that happens.

I have kinkeshi still in capsules that have melted the capsules pretty bad, it's just a chemical reaction that happens.

Do you think Eric taking them out of the capsule (meaning vintage Kinkeshi that have never been opened) devalues them in any way?

Its probably more of a collectors value question; I have noticed that unopened/mint Kinkeshi inside the capsule sell more on yahoojapan etc

I took mine out just because the melting capsule bothered me and the Kinkeshi were just tucked away (plus I didn't have them in my collection individually).

I almost feel they are not appreciated if let inisde the capsule...but they do look cool inside a capsule in mass amounts or in a Gashapon machine.

Which is why I keep repeats inside of them but with the Keshi inside in an additional plastic bag too (I have been observing some for a little more than a year periodically and so far no damage/melting).

What I noticed was:

-If they already had a chemical reaction and are then cleaned up, they dont "react" again.

In a blog I read once (in Japanese) someone had a theory that the capsule plastic used in the 1980's when manufactured was to blame. That maybe now the type of plastic used is different or didnt have that chemical etc

fascinating stuff for an OCD collector like me (hahaha)

Thanks!  Definitely good to know.  I just have 7 of the original at the moment but 59 more arriving probably Monday or Tuesday.  4 different colors all together.

Old bump, but after getting into the comic I've kinda gone head-first into the little rubber men and saw a decent deal on a complete figure-only set on Mandarake (not so great of a deal after shipping though...). It just arrived yesterday and I mostly agree with OP's sentiments, but wanted to put my thoughts out there as I tried doing a lot of research before ordering and didn't find too much, so I figure someone might find this useful eventually.

After thinking about Muscle men for way too long I decided quickly that unless Mr. Bezos tossed more than a couple bucks my way, I was never going to get anywhere near a complete Japanese set, so I told myself I'd go on a flesh M.U.S.C.L.E. quest and just scoop this up to gaze upon everything I wouldn't find on our shores.

The Good:

  • Obviously, bank for your buck. Assuming you get all the figures, it has to be the cheapest way to get this things in your hand right?
  • The figures themselves LOOK good with crisp details, and none of the figures I've seen had any noticeable flashing
  • I was not expecting the box to be as big as it was, but pictures didn't do it justice I feel. IMO I love the size of it. It's sturdy and looks awesome on a shelf. I love the non-sensical english blurb on the side too. Can anyone inform me if it's a quote from the series or something?

Not so Good:

  • Already stated, but they're smaller than the originals. I don't have a genuine Kinkeshi figure (yet...) to compare it to, but a M.U.S.C.L.E. figure is decently larger. Thankfully, taken by themselves with no direct comparison, the size is perfectly adequate and doesn't bother me at all*
  • They're pretty soft. I had heard about reprints being firmer than the originals so I was hoping they'd be closer to M.U.S.C.L.E. but I'm assuming this set is the same material as the originals. Again, no Kinkeshi to compare it to so if someone could inform me on how they compare I'm interested to hear!

The Garbage:

  • Not sure if you can chalk it up to QC or material choice or whatever, but characters will be deformed. Not elephant man mind you, but a lot of these guys will sadly never walk again. Standing most of them up is impossible because legs are bent awkwardly and incorrectly, and a lot of the two-piece combinations sit super awkwardly and feel like they just aren't right. Maybe that's normal with regular Keshi too, but it was still disappointing
  • They smell like they've been smoking two packs a day. This is 100% my opened set and doesn't affect my """"""review"""""" in any way. I'm just getting flashbacks from importing Sega Saturns and getting nicotine clouds in my room upon opening the packages like that one Simpsons gag. Good times.

All in all, I don't regret the purchase. I got a good price on it and opening them and looking at them one by one has been worth the price of admission. If I had spent $400 on it new though, I'd probably regret it. Overall, it's a cool set. I'm just now struck thinking of ways of displaying them. Unfortunate, as I wanted to keep a couple standing at my workplace to keep me company but alas, M.U.S.C.L.E. men will have to do

Thanks for the reviews guys. I'm hoping to pick up a box set of these. I grew up with the original MUSCLE figures from Mattel and have a complete set of 236. I always wanted to get a hold of the rest of the missing Japanese Kinkeshi.
