Hi everybody, and a happy holiday season to all :) I will have a custom to submit here soon that's gonna blow everybody on here away :woot: :shok: But first I need some advice on another one I "may" do in the future. I say may, because if it exceeds my current skill level I might put it off till later, or s@*#can it altogether. This is gonna be a spoiler so you'll not be surprised by it anyway if it appears. It's gonna be a baby Jem'Hadar from the Star Trek DS9 series :) I've already "mostly" figured out how I'm going to do the little bony forehead crest thingy and the little bony spikes on his face. But the thing I'm having trouble figuring out, is how to do a "skin" layer over him that has that leathery rhino like texture they have. Can anyone give me any ideas on how to achieve this effect  :unknw: I'll leave a couple pics on this post to give an idea of what I'm talking about.

Well depends if you sculpt completely the head or customize one. You can carve directly on the head or use green stuff on it and imprint smal scale texture.

Hmmm...I thought about that a bit when considering my options. Gonna customize a baby doll I have, head and all. Don't have any green stuff or whatever, but I do have apoxie sculpt. But apoxie sculpt isn't cheap and it may take a lot of it to do the whole head. Planning to use the apoxie sculpt for the forehead crest/jaw and temple spikes. Tested trying to texture with a wood burner by carefully trying to "melt" lines into the surface of an extra head I have, and it didn't work very well, so that's out. I may just go with a smooth head/face as the little guy would be a baby, and as I remember in the single episode in the series that featured a Jem"Hadar baby, he had a smooth face and head, as the wrinkles and lines hadn't developed until later as he grew into adulthood. He didn't even have the bony forehead crest and spikes on his face early on as I recall, just a single little bone like dot in the middle of his forehead. Even so I think I'll at least give him some small spikes on his face, and a little bony forehead crest so he'll look like a Jem"Hadar should. Maybe make up a reason for this uncharacteristic "overdeveloped" appearance in his back story. Should be cool :D

Depending on how thick a plastic and how big the dolls head is, mark the pattern and use a rotary tool to carve most the texture in. Might take a bit of practice but would be the faster/cheaper way. Any rough portions can be sanded smooth. The other parts, horns, crest, etc, would be good for apoxie sculpt or any other similar compound.

Excellent idea mannakat  :thanks: I have a Dremel and one of those harbor freight pencil engravers that use 2 AAA batteries. Just might give that a go  Gonna practice it on a few spare heads though first
