Hey guys, I probably should have asked this before doing what I've been doing, but please hear me out and opinions are GREATLY appreciated. (And sorry if this is the wrong forum).

Short Question; Is the production of new bootleg Muscle Figures frowned upon if clearly presented as bootleg.

Long Question; I'm a freelance Illustrator and recently started producing toys of my own design. I also collect bootleg Muscle Men. Every time I pour a figure, I have overpour resin that I've been putting into smaller molds of bootleg muscle men as to not waste resin and recap production costs. I've been packaging them with headers that are goofy plays off bootleg packaging and poorly translated korean, and in the item listings, use the word bootleg frequently. While I am well aware this is theft of intellectual property, as collectors, am I being an asshole? To try and curb this I made an amalgamation figure, Dieneruman, but just want to hear what die-hard collectors have to say. Pics below.

Thank you to anybody who responds.

P.S. - I traded my claw bootleg, and was told after that it's a figure almost never bootlegged, so if anybody has one they want to part with (specifically a bootleg) let me know.

Someone gave you bad info. The #153 has always been the most copied and always will be. http://uofmuscle.com/images/Claw1.jpg

Ah, I've seen the myriad of new claw bootlegs, I think the guy meant period bootleg, ie from the late 80's.

Pretty neat way to recapture some of your pouring costs. Those headers graphics are sweet!!

What kind of pricing are you thinking?

As far as negative opinions, no worries there. The only time there is a stink is if someone is trying to exactly reproduce a rare figure.

For example, you might catch some flack if you try recreating a purple claw. Some people will welcome it, some people will hate it, others will be ok as long as there is an identifiable mark (i.e. your trademark) that can be used to differentiate it in pics.
The biggest concern there is unscrupulous sellers down the road trying to pass them off as legit on eBay.

Good luck! Please respond back with pricing. :)

I really like that header !

Are you on instagram?

I think it's ok if you sell them as long as you say that they are bootlegs. But i'm no expert.

I'd like to see a date on the header somewhere, so as not to confuse anyone into thinking it might be a bootleg set from an earlier era.

And altering the TM is always a preferable action where repros are concerned.

Thanks for the feeback guys!

The two packs have been $10 just because I haven't been able to afford the headers and bags in bulk.

Thank you! Yes, my art is on instagram at @sam_heimer, and my toy project is @hh_toys_inc.

Going forward I will attempt to putty out the YSNT and maybe add edition dates to the headers!

Here's the franken figure I made.

Bootlegs will never bother me as much as Mattel M.U.S.C.L.E. never releasing exactly same feel, smell, toughness, new line of figures with new poster.

The MOTU and other Super Mattel licensed M.U.S.C.L.E.'s are nice if the China part was removed for YSNT, and if the color and feel of the slightly softer figures was adjusted to match our 80s figures. And the smell is only familiar to those from the 80s.

Ultimate Muscle was cool and new 15 or so years ago, but I still would of preferred the simplicity of the original.

Well said, this forum is built on people trying to expand the world of the toy lines they love with their own passion and creative efforts poured into it.

Signing the bottom of your work or leaving some mark to say this is a custom legitimizes your efforts and shows that your intentions are pure as well as helping protect newer less knowledgeable collectors from those unscrupulous people who would try to resell one persons custom bootleg as a rare original. Plus all artist sign their work right?

Awesome header card

Thanks for showing such concern with doing the right thing.

Keep up the good work
