Alright, sorry for the delay, but here's the poll for FAC 17: Gormiti and Fistful of Power, better late than never! A big thank you and congratulations to everyone who entered, i think this is definitely one of our best contests yet!

Voting will last for seven days as usual, if someone could put a shout-out on the main page that'd be great. We get 30 votes a DAY for the toy battles, we should have so much more than that in a week!

Good luck everyone, and let the voting begin!

Tough choice. It came down among Tortle's Tasarau and Scummdogg's painting. In the end, the Cthulhuesque painting took it in my book.

Wow, it is evident of all the hard work that went into making these masterpieces. The Sea Reibe PVC carving is incredible. I, however, had to go with "Turtles" Being a big fan of the TMNT especially the early issues this piece caught my eye and did not let go!

Man, after looking at the original thread, I wish I could vote for Scummy and Reccoom. The scale of the carving is amazing!

The only reason it didn't get my vote initially is that the featured figures arn't very detailed like I expect to see in an etching (only having seen stuff like Four Horsement of the Apocalypse by Albrecht Dürer). Comparison to ancient masterworks cost you the vote, I guess. I would never have guessed it was as large as it is, though!

i voted for Ericnilla's Gheos - i think the level of detail is very impressive and you know when i seen it, i immediately thought of a Gormiti movie starring Mickey Rourke as Gheos ;) purely based on Ericnillas drawing.

On the subject of Reccoom's carving, i recommend that anyone on the fence go check out all his images in the FAC 17 thread itself. I was going to post a couple of them in here, but they're huge files and apparently 10MB is the upper limit for attachments in a single post.

I can't figure out who i'm voting for yet...i've got it narrowed down to three entries....maybe four.

INCREDIBLE SHOWOFF OF TALENT GUYS!!!

One of the most difficult polls to choose a winner from ever,
probably THE most difficult.

I really love Tortle´s Turtles and his Tasarau;
Scummdog´s Sea Tribe and Airot´s People of the Forest!
All other entries are very nice too, but these three came the closest to my winner:
Reccoom´s SEA TRIBE PVC CARVING!!!

Effin´nice work guys!!

DK77.

PS Just out of curiosity, how much time did your carving cost you Reccoom??

I was a bit underwhelmed in the FAC 17 thread because I'm not familiar with Gormiti, but seeing all the entries together, just Wow.

I went with Airot, with Reccoom as my second choice (is that a muscle I see).

Scumdogg-Nice switch up of mediums, me likes.
Tortle-Two super solid enteries but they didn't grab me (mostly I think becuse I don't know Gormiti that well), really enjoy seeing the a piece like Turtles which you
probably had a blast drawing. The fun bursts out of the entry (I've almost convinced myself that I made the wrong vote)
Ericnilla-You're to good, I never seem to vote for you unless I have to pick my jaw off the floor. This piece only made the jaw drop to about knee level.
Lethalwhip-Always fantastic to see a new entry. Of your two I liked SD Lethalwhip better. Sometimes I use whoever had the best gimmick as a tie breaker. I could use more
color but thats a personal prefrence. I've voted for an Ericnilla piece or two regardless. Keep entering please
Musclemenkids-I love your entry (first one?) I think in the right contest I'll throw down a vote. I would have loved to see a holiday entry from you.

Theorgg-
In regards to detail, I knew the background would be heavy in texture, so i kept the charachters to linework, lest they be lost in the clutter. My tastes lean much heavier towards design (positive/negotive space, color balance, flow of vision, line weight) than just gobs of detail. I prefer to have an almost musical flow to the lines in carving, with clarity of what's being seen.
Attached File  paisleygecko_002.jpg   641.59K   14 downloads
Plus, pressing down on the back of a razorblade for as long as this project took (30 hours carving, to answer Donkeykidd77's question) was really painfull, and has left me with no feeling in my 1st finger on my right since jan 29th. Not complaining, as I knew the consequences before I started: just thought others might not be aware of how demanding print plates are on the artist.

Mrjayberry-
Three muscles, two MotU's, one MIMP, one battlebeast, one dragonmagic, and seven sea tribe Gormiti.

Scummdogg-
Sorry about the file sizes. If I had stained the plate, I would have been able to use smaller files. I just couldn't bring myself to taint the pristine white just yet.

hands down best fac ever. great turnout and every single entry is a winner. the new talent really shined this round and made this really great. i had an extremely hard time making a decision.

ericnilla needs to start doing freelance work as a conceptual artist. honestly. no bullshizznit. how great does that drawing of gheos look? looks pretty effing great.

airot's style is fantastic. the amount of work she's put into all of her entries is astounding. and who didn't get a smile on their face when they looked at her entry? great stuph.

scumdogg is the master of all trades. you could hand him a tootsie roll and a bucket of pig slop and he'd fashion a terrific rendition of an lrg in his original style. and it would look great! he's never let me down in these contests and always comes in strong with a great entry.

two entries from lethalwhip! not only two, but two awesome entries. i think i like the regular one better than the sd, but that may only be because of the scan. wonderful job, hope to see more in future facs.

musclemenkids prolly has my overall favorite concept here. can you imagine the mud cowl has to be dropping as he tries to get that spell off before gheos turns him into jelly? major mud. this is easily one of my faves of the contest. hope to see many more from you as well.

reccoom is a robot from the future who was programed to come up with completely creative concepts for these facs and execute them at a professional level. i know how long and hard he must have worked on that. and i too know the sting that eventually turns to numbness from highly precise carving. it'll come back some day bruddah.

i think tortle could draw anything, and i mean anything, and make it look badass. seriously, ask him to draw a picture of you getting a vasectomy and you'll love it. the turtles entry is my fave of the two, but both were excellent.

i wish i could have voted for two entries. i was torn between eric's gheos and musclemenkids gheos. i'm slightly biased since gheos is my favorite. he's got a gigantic hammer for hell's sake. in the end after a two out of three coin toss decision, i went with eric's. while i regret not getting to also vote for musclemenkid's entry due to the sheer love i have for it. i'm comforted by the fact that eric's pic is the best rendition of gheos i've ever seen. you can feel the power that only the lord of the earth can possess.

excellent work by all. again, this is easily the best contest hands down.

I was torn between 3. Airot's, and both of Tortle's. I ended up going with Airots because something about this picture just shines to me. I think its the contrast. I'm not much of an artist so I cant say for sure, but this one stood out the most to me. Its awesome! Tortle's were both sweet, I love the tree guy, and I LOVE turtles hahahaha.

Like always, great work from all and I enjoy looking at every piece!!! Keep up the good work.

Awesome, I knew one muscle and the battlebeast but not knowing much about Gormiti I thought the rest probably were (well there is one other muscle that I definatly should have noticed as such) The rest now that you mention it are unmistakable. I love this piece more and more all the time.

It feels like the last few contests I always say, "This is the best group of entries yet."

Well, it's true again. I'm just blown away with how these contests have grown and continued to improve. Thank you to all the participants, I really can't say how much I appreciate all your effort.

I have no idea who I am voting for as I write this. I'm hoping writing feedback for the artists will help me decide who to vote for. I'll also be struggling because I don't know the Gormiti figures.

Ericnilla- Gheos
Wow. This drawing just leaves me with such an emotional response - here's why: is he good or bad? Sometimes that kind of ambiguity works against a character, like the artist didn't know. Here I feel like it was a conscious decision. This character could be either. Sure the evil version is easy to imagine, but the good version happens for a couple specific reasons for me. One, the delicateness of some of the shards – they are sharp and dangerous but have great detail. The second is a combination of the expression and lack of downward movement in the hand. I see these as frustration, rather than anger. Something has pushed this character too far – not to anger, but ultimate frustration.

Airot- People of the Forest
This looks like it should be in a classic children's book – which is a good thing. There are two very specific areas that standout to me in this drawing. One, is the left arm of the smaller figure. The wood grain is simply perfect. My eye was instantly drawn to it. The second is the skirt of the taller figure. Great detail on the leaves, but amazing shading. On such an awkward figure it could have been easy to loose the form in the skirt, but in this drawing it really manages to showcase the shape of the figure. This drawing also makes me want to look for more meaning. What does the bird on the left shoulder on the right of the picture mean? There's something to be said for a piece that makes you want to investigate.

Scumdogg- Sea Tribe
I had to go back to the other thread to learn exactly what he had done. It was painting with acrylics. First, I love that he stepped out of his comfort zone – although you would never know it. Scumdogg's strength is always around color and a feeling a movement. This painting has it in gobs. I think the figures crawling on the rocks and swimming simply look fantastic. Personally I would have like to have seen some clouds, only to balance the picture a bit. It seems much heavier on the bottom. That's not really constructive criticism, just a personally feeling. Here's the constructive criticism, the middle figure seems awkward – specifically the figure's raised left hand. It is an awkward motion in combination with the body. The hand is turned inward and appears to be coming back, as if he is signaling to get out of the water. However the body positioning doesn't match this sentiment. If the body was going to stay positioned the same, it would have been less awkward to have the hand facing out. Then it could have been a Yo Joe-pose or a "high five bee-eye-itches"-type pose. This is a very minor point, but something that stuck out to me. Overall it's a beautiful piece. I can't wait to see more paintings, or any other mediums, from Scumdogg.

Lethalwhip- Lethalwhip & SD Lethalwhip
I grouped these together because my comments would be so similar. First, it's always exciting to see new artists participating. The first Leathalwhip is really nice. It looks like it could have been an image that was blown up and traced – which ultimately works against the drawing. While the quality is high, the feeling appears to be missing. Colors or some surrounding context could have breathed some life into this picture. The SD Leathalwhip was also really nice. I liked it much better because it really showed a point-of-view and interpretation of the character. I'll be very interested to see more art from Leathalwhip.

Musclemenkids- Cowl vs. Gheos
Who knew he could draw? What have you been doing?!?! Just tell the kids it's time to draw and let's see some more work! I like this piece for the same reason I liked Airot's. I feel this could be in a children's book. The colors and "bubblyness" of it are engaging, emotive, and friendly. The one piece of, hopefully, constructive criticism is the left arm of the yellow guy. The shoulder blade and hammer seem a bit awkward. I wish I could offer a suggestion on how to fix it, but I lack the talent. Otherwise a great, and very fun, piece.

Reccoom Kaboom- Sea Tribe PVC Carving
This is simply a stunning piece. This should probably win a special yearly award for hardest project/most commitment. I'd love to see it in person, because I bet it would force you to vote for it. There are three things I really love about it: (1) the cast of characters; (2) the sand; and (3) Mer-Man. Those were the things that I most enjoyed. Here's the odd part. This is a piece of art that I can stand back and enjoy on a technical level. I realize the craftsmanship, imagination, and ingenuity that went into it. I realize that there are people that would even pay great sums of money to own it. But it doesn't make an emotional connection with me – not because the piece lacks it, but simply because I don't connect with it. It's like seeing a beautiful vase. I can appreciate it, but don't have an emotional reaction. Perhaps this even speaks to the quality of this piece?

Tortle- Tasarau & Turtles
Like Leathalwhip I'm combining Tortle's entries. The Tasarau is technically great, it's just a really awesome piece. However the Turtles piece combines the quality with all of the fun. If there was a display of Tortle's life, then this piece should be there. It shows his talents, interests, and sense of fun. I hope this picture ends up on a wall, because it does not deserve to be put away. What really impressed me is that Tortle took characters that share many similarities, yet are very different, and made them a cohesive group. The characters look like they should and go seamlessly together.

So who do I vote for?

In the end my vote went to Airot. Technically it was great, but it was the feeling of...needing interpretation, that made me vote for it. I felt like I should research the trees and their origin, and the significance of the bird. Frankly, I doubt that much thought went into it, but that was the feeling I got. I guess emotional response was the deciding factor for me this time.

Again, congratulations to all the participants!

You gentlemen (and ladies?) definitely have my attention. I did NOT expect to see this level of artwork in this contest. I didnt know what to expect but im impressed with every single entry. You are all truly talented and should combine forces to produce a LRG comic book (or strip ) :woot: iI also had an extremely hard time making a decision.

ericnilla Right out of the gate your image mde me pause. Utterly fantastic. It reminds me of sketch/concept work ive seen in the back of comic books. Speechless.....

airot The level of detail that your art displays captivating as well as the emotion exuded.

scumdogg Who knew ? ( i didnt) Is that an oil painting? Cthulu-esque indeed! I can imagine this in a museum as art from an ancient culture. It reeks of "class".
lethalwhip VEry nice work (im a bit partial to the non SD version myself but the SD is nice as well). I can clearly imagine your art style being used in comics. Heck a comic included with the Gormiti figures.
musclemenkids I have a "friend" that produces childrens books. He has been in Barnes and Nobles, Chapters and a few other large book stores (promoting). Your artwork is better than his. Your inclusion of a "conflict" scene really brings life to your work. You might want to consider a small starter book.

reccoom So im preparing a meal and having a friend over and they wonder out of eye sight but still within earshot and after a few moments of silence i go to check on them. I find them staring at your piece hanging on my wall. They inch closer and pull away...and inch closer again as they are mesmerized by the characters ETCHED into the medium you chose.

tortle between you and Ericnilla ...JEEz-US.... Your work is like a dessert that there isnt enough of. You get angry because you want more! Your art has a ton of character. Your thick borders and shading bring your art to life.

Im really torn on who to vote for as ALL of the entries are high quality. Im a fan of the Gormiti Gheos figure. I was the first time id seen it. Ericnillas Gheos is ...breathtaking. That might be a bit much but its very impressive.
As someone else mentioned " i'm comforted by the fact that eric's pic is the best rendition of gheos i've ever seen. you can feel the power that only the lord of the earth can possess.".

Scumdoggs oil painting is something id hang in a gallery. I swear that looks like an oil painting.

Ultimately though...despite the fact that the colors of the other artwork are eye catching... Recooms etched piece has multiple factors in its favor:
Its unique (the medium)
It forces one to pay close attention to it.
Its a conversation piece that would stir those that arent fans of "comic style" art/ fantasy art.

Just incredible Recoom. Youve got my vote :woot:

And you are here, with them, as so many specks of sand.

That was the FIRST time you've painted?

:stunned:

Well, sort of. I did two acrylic paintings when forced to in high school art class, but they were terrible and that was eleven years ago. But yeah, this is the first one i've done since then. :)

Not yet, mostly because i've been working pretty small. I also kind of prefer the quick-drying because i can layer things quickly without screwing anything up. And if they drying time does become a problem, keeping a spray bottle on hand keeps the paint pretty workable for a while longer.
