Well i just figured everyone nowadays talks alot about the new, but doesn't reminisce enough about the old! So if anyones interested lets all just talk about some of our favorite Arcade games growing up as a kid!

Personally I have two games that immediately come to mind! I just loved The original Contra! Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A!
Right everybody!

Then my all time favorite had to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 The Arcade! Lord knows I pumped enough quarters into that machine to pay for it 2 times over.

Well if this topic is found to be something of interest then Post away everybody!

Um....I thought this topic was about arcade legends....both of those games cane in during the last few waves of the arcade era, and I would hardly consider them to be legends.

My choices would have to be Bosconian and Ms. Pac-Man from Namco, Joust and Robotron from Williams, and a few others.

I called the topic arcade legends because any arcade game can be a legend in it's own right. Some of us are older than others and visa versa. If I said I liked the donkey kong arcade for instance I would be lying to myself. Since I am of no doubt younger than most of the posties on this board, my concept of a legendary game would be of a more modern time frame. :D

And by the way, They still are making new arcade games you know. The last few waves would best consist of dance dance revolution and the such. I'm quite sure the arcade era is still as fresh as it ever was.

Oh! and a shout out to Ridureyu! How could I forget about Double Dragon!
and Ninja Gaiden!

I can see your point about a game being a legend in itself, I was thinking we were talking about legendary-overall games.

As far as the second part, arcades are truely dead, the fall happened in 1994. DDR, those stupid shooting games, and those other games wherein you ride things, dance, or look generally pinheaded otherwise are NOT arcade games, merely bastitch hybrids that helped to kill the true arcade.

Hahahahaha! What a Coinkydink! I haven't been to a real arcade since 1994. Man time flies. Oh and I just heard about DDR from some other people I know. You have a point about the true arcade though. Our idea of a good arcade has been long dead, but remember that though we are not exactly old yet all the kids nowadays think that our favorite games we had when we were kids are seriously lame to them, compared to what they play. Even a few years gap in age can change someones idea of a great game. Fortunately for me I have a very extensive classic and modern game collection.

P.S. Don't let what I stated deter from the topic!

WOW
I love Arcade games.
I even actually own one , the case is an original for the game ROLLING THUNDER
but HAMMERING HARRY is the game board thats in there at the moment , i found a place in sydney that sell old boards that start from $50 , so i'll have to see if i can get the original game for it.

As far as my favorite games go, well even growing up in the country didn't seem to stop me from playing every decent Arcade game that were ever made from the 80's through to the mid 90's

here are a few of my favorites

GAME YEAR MANUFACTURER
Mr Do! 1982 Universal
10 Yard Fight 1983 Irem
Ring King 1985 Data East USA
Commando 1985 Capcom (data east)
Tehkan World Cup 1985 Tehkan
Gladiator 1986 Taito America Corp
Rush & Crash 1986 Capcom
Super Bubble Bobble 1986 Taito America Corp
Shinobi 1987 Shinobi???
Wonder Boy in Monsterland 1987 Sega / Westone
Major Title 1990 Irem
Captain Cammando 1991 Capcom
WWF WrestleFest 1991 Technos Japan
In The Hunt 1993 Irem
Metal Slug 1996 Nazca / SNK

I know i've left heaps out but these made me lose more money
than a stock exchange crash.

I believe the death of the Arcade game is a result of technology + the changing of genre , once the arcade game took on a one to one fighting approach with such games as street fighter , mortal combat , and latter tekkan people wanted better graphics more blood and faster action, all of a sudden a small dude running around in a forest looking for a few coins so he could buy a sword didn't seem cool.
But what they didn't realize was it's the fun factor that made the game not the super graphics.

DDR, t stupid shooting games, and those other games where in you ride things, dance, or look generally pinheaded otherwise are ARE arcade games. shooting games, ride games where back in the old days to. look at Pole Position you ride in it. Lethal Enforcers was a shooting game. arcade dead in 1994?? HA HA hare is just an small list of games that came out after 1994 that are not DDR,shooting games, and those other games where in you ride things.Angel Eyes,Arkanoid Returns,Art Of Fighting 3 ,Astra Super Stars, thats just from 1996 to 1998 let's see some 2001 to 2004 here they are.

well whould you look at that all kinds of games that are made after 1994.

Lets take a look at that list:

Golden Tee Fore! - Crappy trackball golf games played by yuppies in bars are deffinately not arcade classics.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Bandwagon movie, bandwagon game.

King Of Fighters - Fighting game. We can all blame Street Figher 2 (from 1993) for this.

Virtua Striker - No one likes soccer.

Capcom Vs. SNK 2: Mark Of The Millennium - See: KOF. See: goofy people with nothing better to do then punch random button combonations to do repeat moves, beat the other player, and accomplish nothing worthwhile at all, other then claiming to be the best at the game. Nothing to be proud of at all.

Sorry, but your list is pretty laughable at best. I stand by my statement, the arcade has been dead since 1994, and your precious fighting games can take part of the blame.

I've noticed that you discount games based entirely on genre - for example, "it's a fighting game. Therefore, it sucks and is not an arcade game."

Okay, so you're promoting your personal opinion as absolute fact, and if anyone disagrees with you, then they're morons? Yeeeesh.

it's true, arcades as we knew them are gone, but they still exist - they shift pretty much every decade, because the market changes. You might as well say that there haven't been any video games at all since the SNES.

Ok, here's the distinction:

If I said, "All fighting games suck" or as you used, "Its a fighting game, therefore is sucks", then I would say yes, thats a pretty crappy arguement. However, I'm not saying all fighting games are bad, just the mentioned ones are. For example, the Konami classic Yei Air Kung Fu, or Nintendo's classic Kung Fu, are great games, and happen to be fighting games. For furture refrence I guess I'll have to make that a little more clear.

As far as the other part, I don't present anything of mine as fact, its merely an opnion. We all have different ones and I love hearing different ones.

I disagree in part. First, fighting games rejuvenated the ailing arcade scene in the early 90's. But I do agree that the arcade, as I remember it, is gone. I think the main reason is that console games are as good or better than the stand-up arcade games. The only added entertainment an arcade can bring that a console cannot is the sit-down machines (like driving or piloting) or the stand-up shooters with the guns that you fire at the screen. That's why, in most arcades, those are the only machines you really see.

As for my favorite "classic" arcade games, I would go with:
(In the interest of brevity, I'll limit my list to 10.)

Street Fighter 2
Ms. Pac Man
Galaga
Dragon's Lair
Dig Dug
TMNT (I agree with the previous post.)
G-LOC (I think that's what it was called... it was an Afterburner sequel.)
Star Wars (Original arcade game.)
Mortal Kombat 2
Hard Drivin' (One of the first 3-D driving games. I used to love going through that loop!)

Aren't arcades still going strong in Japan?

Absolutely.
I visited a few dozen this past summer. Japan has many several story buildings with different genres of merchandise per floor. Many of these several story buildings will often have a floor dedicated to arcades. There are also several "SEGA Worlds" from what I have seen, and these friggin kick arse. I have been to a couple that are like five stories tall, full of games. Some games I have never heard of and many I am sure we will never see over here. I was in dork heaven. Japanese girls, Japanese manga, Video Games, and Kinnikuman stuff.

To post something related to the topic at hand. I would have to say as far as legends go. My favorite as a kid (80's) were always: Galaga, Dig Dug, Popeye, and Donkey Kong Jr. Until of course Street Fighter Two came out. By far probably the most popular video game in video game history. It opened up a whole new door to video game greatness. It had millions of games copy it. The fireball (down, right, button) technique is used in every fighting game since. Due to it being more recent, I am not sure if it can be considered a legend, but it will be.

Sorry for the multiple responses. I am a post padding bastar d. I think Tortle is exactly right. In some of the arcades I visited in Japan (mentioned above) there was even floors or sections aside from the games exclusively for console games. Many I visited had like an X-Box room, and you pay by the hour. There was like a hundred different Screens and consolues all linked somehow and you could play Halo or other games with like 8 other people at a time. It was cool, you did not know who was kicking your arse.

Just gonna post some of my fav. Arcade games not talking about what sucks and whats dead

a few years before I started getting into collecting MUSCLEs like crazy, I was into Arcade machines

I first bought Joust in Dec of 98 for $100
I personally love Joust the 1982 classic can't beat it and it has awesome pictures on the cabinet a jouster on an ostrich gotta love it

two years later I bought a Mr. Do! cocktail table (monitor in a glass cover table for the younger ppl  ) and I bought the boards Mr Do's Castle, Mr Do's Wild Ride and Do Run Run which like Mischa said I can change the boards to play the other games on this machine

The last machine I bought was a Jamma 5 button machine and about 75% of most arcade games between 86-98 are Jamma's meaning you can swap the boards and play a bunch of diffrent games TMNT, The Simpsons, Double Dragon 1 and 2, WWF Wrestle Fest, Time Killers, Sailor Moon, WWF WrestleMania and some others I have that are just the boards

If anybody ever wants to buy an Arcade Machine I strongly suggest buying a Jamma machine with a lot of buttons (5 or 6) they can play alot of diffrent games and they can play games that only use 2 or 3 buttons

ebay has some for like $100 - $200 (at least they did when I bought mine) and some boards sell for as low as $10 bucks

If anybody has a question PM me and ill help you out ^_^

anybody remember when Toys R Us sold an arcade cabinet (plain white) where you can put your TV and what ever game system you want into it?
I wanted that so bad it was in the mid 80's I think when they had that

Just typing this brought back some fun times and all the games I mentioned are Arcade Legends to me

My favorites depend on my mood, but there are certain ones in different genres that are always worth it - TRON, Pac-Man, Double Dragon, and yes, even the Street Fighters. Elevator Action 2 is a great way to kill a half hour, and even the original Willow is a ton of fun (and a quarter-sucker).

I love the Neo-Geo games, ranging from metal Slug to King of Fighters, but they're somewhat of a different genre of arcade games - stuck in a nebulous space between"throwback" and "contemporary."

By the way, has anyone here played the 1994 Battletoads arcade game? it's possibly the bloodiest thing in existence.

well, I may get flacked by alot of you due to my choices, but here they are:

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo-
cant deny the fact that it was one of the best. Capcom was on to something with these super moves....

Street Fighter Alpha 3-
I tend to play it since it's one of the last "thinking man" fighting games out there.

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike-
ditto.

Gauntlet-
a classic. Got to love "Green Wizard, needs food badly!"

Mortal Kombat 2-
Never in my life have I saw an MK game his good. the MK game that became a legend.

PunchMania/ Fighting Mania-
I think before this game came out, I was what they call a 10 pound weakling, now...well, if my arm wassnt bionic, I could of taken down the game on medium setting.

Intial D ver. 3-
I dont know what to say about this one, if your looking for a racing game with something extra, then Initial D is the way to go

Tekken 5-
Best. Tekken. Ever.
