So, this has been a total kick to read! I mean, it really is an honor to be a part of this conversation. i could not have known 20 years ago this conversation would be taking place.
About 2 years ago, i had the desire to bring all my muscles from PA to CA where i currently live. I thought my son would have fun with them. I had a freakin blast with these guys as a kid! no doubt, these and star wars were all i played with. (i am 32 now). i made a wrestling ring out of wood, nails and rubber bands. my parents did not buy the ring for me, plus i thought it was too small....and i did not like how you sit the guy in it. i had names for most of these guys...often similar to wrestling look-a-likes (hogan; road warriors; Rock n roll express). i used to use dracula blood on them. i made paper belts that were taped ever so carefully around their waists (i just saw one of those in the box last week!) So i brought them to CA. later, i decided to look them up on line to see what else i could learn about them. other than the blood, which i could wash off, they were in good shape. Ah, but robots don't bleed! Then i saw some are "super-rare" and worth a pretty penny. Imagine my utter shock as i saw what you guys call black hole sunshine, on the site! i mean, i have that freakin guy! no way! no way! Then i found him in the box...but he was missing the middle part (i literally remember pulling that piece off. he was one of my favorites and i could not decide if i wanted to do that or not! then i figured, fists could go thru him, so i should rip it off). Noah, my son (5th grade at the time_) was looking over my shoulders and he said, "dad, that piece is still in the box!" and he pulled it out (i also have all my star war weopons too). There it was...the punch out....still with the taggy piece attached to it. And so my love affair with muscle grew as strong as it was back in the day.
As for how i aquired this particular guy, i really dont recall. But i do know this. When the local K.B. toys were going out of business, they sold tons of muscles there. i hated the color ones, so i had my dad buy all he could of the pink ones. i remember spending 1.29 on the 4 packs...but that was a lot of money. I think they went lower than that. If i have about 230 today, i know my dad calculated over a hundred bux in muscle invested. So, we probably bought lots when they were .99 a pack. I bought MAYBE one trash can and MAYBE one 28 pack. thats about it. it may have come from one of those. More likely, it came from a 4 pack.
Since then, like all of you, i have become obsessed! I scan the web as you all do. I ask my old friends who had no idea how to take care of their toys. I read what i can about these little guys. And secretly (SHHH) i even had to have a few of the guys throw a few punches and clotheslines. Come on guys, you with me?
Anyway, thats the story. I love the feeling of having something so rare. I have arrowheads, pottery sherds (yes, it is spelled sherds) and i recently found a huge and ultra rare motero and matate (see my myspace page...sugardelic) in the local mountains which i left there, btw. But this guy takes the cake. i then hoped i had another rarity laying around! i mean, if i did get it in a pack, maybe there were 4 rare ones i a pack, right? so the other day, i laid out every single one of them. But to no avail. However, i only need like 15 to get a complete set (not including the rarities).
It cracked me up when, on nathans page, it said something like....we are not sure if these are muscles or not..." i started yelling at the computer with a big smile..."Yes! Yes! they are!". Anyway, the whole experience gave me a semi.....can i say that here?
Thanks arforbes for uploading the pic i sent you! i did not expect to see this here.
Finally, how many of us OWN a super rare? can we get a list of collectors of those who actually have one or more? Or has that already been done. I am ever so curious. hope no one fell asleep reading this.-----Mike------
