Company: Romandoh
Packaging: Carded blister pack. This pack is like the older G1 Romandoh packages where you can slice the tape and slip the card off the blister pack and take out the figure without damaging the package. Very nice for collectors who want to keep re-pack the figure in a mint box.
Size: 7 ½” tall. Tyrannoclaw is rotocast so he isn’t real heavy, but he is heavier than the G1 rotocast figures. Tyrannoclaw is definitely a thick figure.
Where Can I Buy It?: The selection of places to purchase new Romandohs is pretty limited. Either you buy from xxxxxxx.com or you use an auction service like Rinkya.com or Celga.com and purchase them on yahoojapan. xxxxxxx.com is the cheaper choice. Plus, xxxxxxx.com gives you free shipping.
Price Range: $57.00. Tyrannoclaw is not cheap. I have seen him on yahoojapan for as low as $30. But, you still have to tack on bank transfer fees, the auction service’s fees and shipping from Japan.
Sculpt (4.5 out of 5): Romandoh did an excellent job on the sculpt. This has been their strong point with all the G2 figures, and this one is no exception. I have always been unimpressed with the G1 rotocast figures. Tyrannoclaw is pleasant surprise! Instead of the typical smooth and simple sculpts of the past rotocast Romandohs, Tyrannoclaw has plenty of texture and detail. This guy looks and feels like he is a lizard. He is bumpy and rough like the skin of a lizard. He is very well detailed. His facial sculpt is simple but dead on with the manga. His two hands are sculpted with nice detail. Both his open hand and his T-Rex hand have plenty of texture and detail matching Tyrannoclaw’s body. The only smooth part of the sculpt are his shorts and the white part on his chest.
Honestly, since this figure is rotocast, I really wasn’t expecting much in the sculpt department. I am truly blown away. The level and detail and the incredible texture of this figure is impressive.
Paint (4 out of 5): Romandoh delivers a nice solid paint job on this figure. There is plenty of shading on this figure to give added depth to the textured sculpt. There is no slop or bleeding. His skin is a nice dull orange with plenty of dark shading to give him that proper reptilian look. His chest is painted in a flat white outlines in black with no mistakes. His shorts are a flat green with some shading to emphasis his leg muscle sculpts. Tyrannoclaw’s head is painted white with gold and pink and has no errors in the paint application on such small features. His toe claws are painted white as are the teeth on his regular hand and the T-Rex head. The T-Rex has evil yellow eyes and the interior of the mouth is red.
The paint job is very well done with no flaws. The paint really compliments the sculpt and brings this figure to life. This is one of the better paint jobs on a Romandoh.
Articulation (3.5 out of 5): Again, I was not prepared for much in this category since the G1 rotocast Romandohs had a pitiful 7 points of articulation. And once again, Tyrannoclaw proved me wrong! This figure has 14 points of articulation at the shoulders, upper right biceps, right elbow, right wrist, waist, hips, upper thighs, knees and ankles. As an incredible bonus feature, Tyrannoclaw’s left “tail” arm is bendable! There is a wire inside his tail arm that allows you to bend his left arm into a variety of positions.
I was completely speechless when I realized this extra feature. The double the amount of articulation compared to a G1 rotocast figure and the bendable tail arm give this figure plenty of articulation for some cool poses. Also, the T-Rex head’s mouth open and closes.
Accessories (4 out of 5): You get two hands with this figure. A “normal” open hand and the infamous T-Rex head hand. Both are great looking. The open hand is well done with a great sculpt and a nice paint job. But, the T-Rex hand is the best. It looks wicked. It has a great sculpt and paint job. The open and closing mouth adds the dynamic poses for this figure. Romandoh has really put more effort into making quality accessories compared to some of the ones for the G1 figures.
Action Features: N/A
Coolness (5 out of 5): Tyrannoclaw is on the very high end of the “cool” scale. Anything dinosaur related automatically becomes cool. Add to it his great sculpt and paint. Throw in his bendy arm and T-Rex head hand and you get a wild looking figure that stands out on the toy shelf. If you don’t think Tyrannoclaw is cool then you don’t know what cool is!
Value (3 out of 5): This is the category where all Romandohs take a hit. Tyrannoclaw is not a good buy. He costs $57.00. At least shipping is free on xxxxxxx.com. At any rate, $57 is a lot of money to be spending on an action figure. When you spend that type of money then you better get something worth it. To me, Tryannoclaw is worth the money. He is a high quality figure for a rotocast figure. He has cool action features and accessories. Plus, he is a wild looking figure. Tyrannoclaw is also a very rare figure that is hard to find in America. Taking all those points into consideration, I think Tyrannoclaw is worth buying. Nope, not a great buy, but you get one excellent figure for your money.
Overall (4 out of 5): Tyrannoclaw really surprised me. I ordered him along with Kevin Mask. I got Tyrannoclaw mainly because I really liked the character. However, since he was rotocast, I wasn’t really expecting much of a figure. I was looking forward to the Kevin Mask figure much more than this one. And, I was expecting the Kevin Mask Romandoh to totally blow away Tyrannoclaw.
I was so wrong. This figure is incredible. The sculpt and the paint impressed the hell out of me. The amount of articulation and the bendy left arm were fantastic surprises. It is very obvious that Romandoh was determined to make a much more high quality rotocast figure than their previous ones. I hope they continue this pattern for any future rotocast figures. Tyrannoclaw is an awesome action figure that is fun to play with and looks kick arse on your toy shelf. He will definitely stand out in a crowd of toys. He is unique and different. I completely recommend this bad boy.
Here is a pic of Tyrannoclaw with his normal open hand.
